Governor?-WTF!

I was racing this pumped out V6 passat yesterday, I think it was supercharged. but anyway, We were neck and neck through around 120-130mph, then somewhere between there I just started slowing down, I would push the gas and get nothing! I got kinda scared and the when it dropped to about 110 it picked up again, and it drove fine. Now I was under the immpression that our cars did not have a governor, has this happend to anybody else, or if it is the governor how ca I get rid of it?

Never happend to me but i have never gone past....120 mph!!

SLOW DOWN FOOL!! Nah just kidding i've gone up to 132 in my P5 and it would'nt budge after that.It just stayed at 132 it didnt bog down like how you explained, hmmm strange.BTW i was only going that fast cause i had to take a fat s*** and i thought i was going to blow not cause i was racing anyone, lol.I dont street race lost a friend last year to it.:(

sounds like you hit the rev limiter...which will cut your engine off and make you jolt really suddenly...i haven't done this personally on my p5 but tons of times in my friends civic...the highest i've taken the P5 was around 123 then i backed off...i was at about 6k

I know the dangers of street racing, I'm stupid I know! but I don't think it was the rev limiter, I've hit that a hundred time since I replaced my intake and exhaust cams, when I was up there the car was still pulling hard, if it wasn't for that gov. thing I could have easily kept going faster. Plus there was no jolt, the throttle simpley didn't respond anymore... Interesting...

hey guys

i'm guessing rev limiter too. in australia, the P5 is gear/rev limited to apx 208kmh.....130mph. i hit 208kmh not long ago (and i worked it out mathematically too). at that sort of speed there wouldnt be a jolt from hitting the rev limiter in 5th because you have a huge amount of momentum going there.

ever heard of drag-limited? that means the power of your motor (or lack thereof) has maxed out against the drag air creates, thus topping out your max speed.

there is no speed 'governor' on any of the Proteges, ever.

Accually this has happened to me too! There is a rev limiter. If you are let's say street racing, and you do a mad launch, burnout, you will start bouncing off it. This bogging usually happened to me around 140 MPH.

Well, both. The drag on our cars wont let us get past 135 (roughly) stock on a flat surface. That said, at 7500 there is a rev limiter as well. It doesnt go to 8000 like the tach says. I held a shift dragging b/c of a bad start. I planned on hitting about 7800 and doing 2nd, at 7500 it cut.

so linux, it happend to you too? I guess it could be the rev limiter it just can't figure out why it would bring me all the way down to 110 before it picked up again. At first I thought I blew my turbo or something. But the everything was all normal after...

i have hit 132 and my engine shuts off and picks back up at about 128 if you stay on the gas so in my car...not sure why but...i think i have a fuel shut off in mine

How do you guys do it? I fastest I can get my car to go without having miles of open road is about 115mph.

I dont get it.:(

When I bought the car, I heard that there was a governor (er?) at 112 mph or 190 kph. I've never come close to hitting it so I've never had a chance to check it. Maybe its CDN version only? CONFUSION!

I heard a while back ago from a mazdaspeed development guy that either the car had NO governor because the engine topped out around 118, or that it DID have a gov. but the engine topped out way before it, now that would sort of make sense. But I can't remember which one is true. Does anybody have a contact inside mazda that can let us know?
