When I first purchased the vehicle, used with about 58k miles on it, the brakes were in horrendous condition. They slowly but surely deteriorated into nothingness and I was forced to replace them. About 2 months ago I purchased remanufactured calipers and brand new EBC rotors and pads for the fronts. Earlier this week I did the same for the rears along with Goodridge stainless steel brake lines (the lines were rusted into oblivion).
When the fronts were first done, the brake pedal was nice and firm and the car responded instantly. Naturally, I expected the same sensation once the rears were done (I should note that gradually that firmness went away, and I assumed it was because the rears were still messed up). Anyways, I did not experience that upon driving the car away from the shop. The pedal was mushy. The brakes worked, but it's as if they're not getting enough pressure. The lines, pads, and rotors are brand new and the calipers are about as new as they're gonna get without a big brake kit. Something sounds wrong here.
I did some reading up on the situation and it seems as if there's a "break-in" period for new brakes, where the pads and the rotors need some time to let the magic happen. I tried the whole "60 to 10, 10 times, 2 sets" deal but didn't notice any change whatsoever. In addition, when the car is off, the brake pedal locks up completely; it won't budge an inch. The last time this happened, the front brakes were about to die, so things were really bad. But things should be really good now...
Did the shop do something wrong? Do the brakes need to be bled again? I'd really appreciate any advice you all can provide. (mswerd)
