Flat Panel/Plasma TV's

well, sure. he's probably got a crapton of tv's in his house. but using a vizio in the kitchen or the kids rooms, or using a vizio in your home theater are two different things.

the post made it sound like his main tv is a vizio. i'm pretty sure he's got some hard-to-pronounce technophile video projector setup. i would, if i were making that much moneys.

I just said it as a joke, right as I was replying to this thread, a commercial with him talking about vizios came on. I figured they were s***.

I am quessing there is a $40K+ 3-chip DLP projector with atleast 6000 ANSI Lumens in that theater.
119" rear projection too

I bet he feels like a douch repping Vizio and Payton Manning advertizes the ENTIRE sony AV product lines.

Mr 4500 -

I don't know if they have them in your area, but if they do, go look here:

Ultimate Electronics (used to work there)

and / or

Fry's

Both of those are really well known here in the midwest/west, YMMV.

Also look on the companies' own websites for their newest displays. The technology of LCD is starting to slow down in growth, but I'd still recommend getting the newest model because of the developments made. Samsung, Sony, Phillips/LG (they are one and the same, in most cases), and Mitsubishi.

Keep in mind that brands like Vizio are nothing more then a value-line brand...they don't make their own panels, and they don't do much R & D. They just buy an older technology from a company (like NEC or Phillips) and work it into a price point. DON'T BE FOOLED.

We do not have any fry's or ultimate near me. Nor do i have a tweeter unfortunatly.

Anyway I think I have decided to either get a Sony of Philips. I love abilight, i think its a good asset to any tv and what not it just adds to the expierence I feel. But the sony's look so crips. Thanks 1sty for letitng me know that one was old, I figured as much.

I would HIHGLY advise you to go the other way.
Most people with Abilight, enjoy it for all of 2 dyas and then it gets annoying. Also, one more pointless thing to break.
Realisticly, and this is proven, the best color around the TV for experience, is near total darkness. Think about every movie theater on the planet.

Now a better picture, thats worth having everytime you watch TV, no matter the occasion or room lighitng.

None of these are near you?

One thing about ambilight...Really the most important thing if you want to backlight your TV is to set it to a dull gray light. I forget the exact Kelvin temp color rating, but there is a certain gray color that keeps the eye "calm", and helps with strain. You can even paint your walls that color! You can set the ambilight to this color too, and that would be what you want to do long term. Also, you could alternatively install a light behind ANY LCD or Plasma, and achieve the same results...perhaps better. IMO, it is a gimmick with a shred of "good idea" in it, but taken to another unnecessary level.

The Samsungs and Sonys are the ideal for picture quality, but realistically you owe it to yourself to hunt down a Mitsubishi for comparison. Most Videophiles find the color control and overall "look" it provides to be stellar. Just outright amazing. Sometimes they can be had cheaply, too. Just depends. I have nothing against Philips, but I've been to many of their product training seminars, and it seems like they are all the rage in Europe and other areas, but in North America they don't ship their best products. We're always a step behind for them. Mitsubishi and Sony don't do this, from what I can tell (except for Japan, which gets the newest, latest, and greatest well before we do!)

Mitsubishi @ CC

That is the Mitsubishi I'm talking about. Amazing TV, and its brethren are great too.

I hear you guys on the ambilight issues and understand your concern. We have a amdilight Philips in the basement of our house and I love it. My friends sometimes complain about the picture quality (not in a bad sense but because they say its too real). It took me a bit to get used to the TV and what not but I love it, thats the only reason why im saying the philips but I am open to anything really.

I will look into Mistubishi's as well now I guess. Just never put too much thought into them.

And the closest tweeter to me is in Danbury I would say seeing as how I am in Greenwich. but even Danbury is not super close neither.

Side note, i was at a buddies house watching his new LG 55" plasma tonight....I wanted to just go home and watch my 4 year old Sony 37" plasma. Not even a contest.

well, LG is Lucky and Goldstar, right? Korean cars have come a long way, their electronics, not so much.

I thought Samsung was Korean. I know their document cameras are, not sure about the displays.

Samsung IS Korean. For the past couple of year it has been one of, if the most (possibly hundai is #1) profitable Korean companys out there. If you are looking for a fridge or a/c go with LG, if you are looking for a camera or tv go with Samsung. Korean electronics have come a looooong way in the last 5-10 years. This is mostly due to the fact that many Korean company's bought technology from japan, then improved on it, and sold it as there own.

Sony never made a Plasma (of their own...they don't own a plasma manufacturing plant). They sold a remake of NEC, I believe. That is why today, they do not sell a plasma (that I know of.)

The plants I know of:

Matsushita

Lucky-Goldstar

NEC

Pioneer

Fujitsu

Samsung

A bunch of Chinese companies

And with LCD's

Matsushita

Philips

Sony

Samsung

Sharp

NEC

Fujistu

Lucky-Goldstar

and a bunch of Chinese Companies

Most companies choose a build house to simply make them a product, and they brand it as their own. Happens in car audio all the time, as well as many other products available to consumers.

The problem with TV's is that a lot of them rely on markeneering, not engineering or proper quality design. A lot of these Walmart brands are at fault of doing this, unfortunately.

If I had to buy a plasma today, it would be a Pioneer, or Matsushita (Panasonic)

If I had to buy an LCD today, it would be Samsung, Mitsubishi, or Sony

I've never been particularly impressed with ANYTHING LG has made. Their appliances, phones, and TVs all suck.

My dehumidifier has done well :)

lol.. you probably have the same dehumidifier as me then.

I have an LG dehumidifier. Aside from the flimsy drain assembly, (I have it automatically drain out of the house via hose) the thing works well.

Maybe, never thought of auto draining. I have one with a bucket in it that you empty.
