Fiesta ST

Ford just released pricing for the Fiesta ST. As many of you will know, the Fiesta shares its platform and quite a few parts with our Mazda2s, but is heavier and softer, making it the less sporting of the two. Now, however, we're getting the Fiesta ST, which is tuned much more aggressively and includes a 197HP engine. It's basically as close as we'll ever get to the Mazdaspeed 2 we've all dreamed of. Looks like it starts a little above $21k.

Part of me is interested in one, but another part is less than enthused by the prospect of leaving Mazda behind for the less than inspiring styling of the Fiesta. What's everybody else's take on this car?

I'd probably chalk up for a Speed3 if I were to leave the 2, but I def like the ST lineup.

Yea and I just went on the site and built my own... well over $25k... might as well get the Focus...

The fiesta ST is over priced, for a loaded Fiesta ST your looking at slightly over 27K. At that point you might as well spend 2k more and get a focus ST also loaded. If the Fiesta had a price point closer to 24k in its top level trim it would be a killer deal and do a better job separating the two cars. But for now the focus ST is a better deal. You get a lot more car for very little more $$$. I cant imagine it would be hard to upsell someone on a focus st when they compare pricing, the only people buying the fiesta will be hell bent on owning one.

I really like the idea of a similar car with double the power. I for one am very excited and interested in the Fiesta ST. If and when I do get it someone here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area will get a great deal on my intake and short shifter. Although gas mileage isn't what vehicles in the ST line are meant for, that would still be a considering factor for me in choosing between the Focus and Fiesta.

If power is your primary reason for switching do you think double the power is worth double the price in essentially the same car? Because I dont.

It's not necessarily about double the power because I realize that double the power, or at least much more power than stock can be done on the 2 for less. Part of the issue for me is “factory reliability" and factory backed parts in a similar package. My frustration at times with this car is lack of power. With my old job I spent 3/4 of my time on the highway and power to me then wasn't much of an issue. Maybe I should have thought about that a little more before I jumped on this car. Now I spend a lot of time on 2 lane roads and it makes me really think twice before passing. Sorry, just a little rant on my particular reasoning on why the Fiesta. When it does come out I will look at both ST vehicles and see if the roughly 3k difference is worth it.

I would rather just turbo my 2, get coilovers and summer tires. It will be faster than an ST then, and still probably cost less.

Goodbye warranty though.

The problem though is that if you trade/sell your 2 to buy an ST, you're losing thousands of dollars on depreciation. Used 2s aren't worth much.

I know that feel. I kinda sorta want to buy a BRZ/FR-S this fall, but I'm going to end up losing so much money to depreciation. So I decided that I'm just going to pour money and mods into my 2 instead and run it until it dies.

I think your better off keeping it and modifying it otherwise sell it as fast as you can before it loses more value. if you buy a car like the 2 you need to expect to take a massive hit when you sell it or plan on driving it til it dies. Same goes for luxury cars you would have to be a fool to buy any car you do not plan on owning past 150K miles otherwise a lease or a used car is the way to go imo.

the value isnt there for me. it costs way too much. at that price i'd be looking at a frs/brz, vw gti, speed 3, even a civic si... way too many other cars at that price range.. as for the 2, it is the cheapest (new) car i have ever owned (silverado v8, toyota seqoia, honda element, 07 civic si, 07 honda fit, nissan titan) and by far the cheapest to mod, cheapest to gas, cheapest finance (0%), and the funnest to drive.. the 2 has too many things going for it and i cant reason trading all that in for more horsepower.

100% agree with you on this.

Maybe it'll look better in person, but that front end is hideous.

On another note, I thought I'd be super tempted by the Fiest ST when I first heard it was coming but right now I am still thoroughly enjoying my 2.

I think the car looks fine, but the price tag is a bit off. I do agree that the 2 is a blast to drive though. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar 2 is probably the best bang for your buck as far as new cars are concerned.

The mazda 2 is the best bang for the buck at the driving experience when you are pushing it. But for 2012, the best car I drove that just felt great pushing to the limit was teh Fr-S/brz.
I was contemplating on the Fiesta ST, but seeing as how my brother has the Fiesta and I didnt like it much, I am sure I will also not like the ST. 200hp in a car that weights about 2600 pounds must be a blast to drive though...

I too am a bit put off by the looks of the ST. It looks like a fish gasping for air to me. Then again, the 2 looks like a computer mouse.... Not that it's a bad thing...

Can't disagree that the ST is kinda hideous. The fish analogy is right on the money.

Also lol at the 2 looking like a computer mouse. Now I want to 3D print a mouse shaped like one!
