Exhaust gunk?

So I noticed that my exhaust tip is pretty caked with soot and s***. So I was thinking is it possible for that crap to build up farther down the exhaust and cause a small blockage. I have a cs tp and dp. So no cats there.

Its because you don't have cats on the car its just the unburnt fuel. I have the same set up on my car(not a MS3) But turbo. I have not run a cat on my car in over 5 years. my exhaust seems to just have that in the back section by the muffler and nothing further up the exhaust near the engine. since it seems to be so hot there that it just burns it off.

+1 and also the pig rich soot. I'm running a catless dp/rp on stock tune and have the same "problem." Also had the "problem" on catless exhausts on turbo Saab and Volvo cars I've owned over the years.

I have about 34,000 miles on the MS3, with about 21,000 or so on it since going catless.

Can't guarantee you what may be going on with your car, but what you describe is very normal for me. It even throws soot on the floor behind and below the exhaust tip when I fire it up in the mornings.

Pig rich and no cats. But faster than crap passing through a goose. Excuse the animal references.

Mine has done that since day 1. Except on mine it builds up on the bumper around the tip as well. I think it might be time for new plugs.

Part of the problem is the relatively high volume of the exhaust pipe on the MS3 as well. The high volume = lower working pressure and thus less power to just blow the junk out, resulting in deposits. Mine would smoke up the tip WITH cats in short order.

I clean mine every couple of days, so it doesnt get to bad. I have a roll of paper towels in the garage, and just grab a couple in the morning give it a wipe, and head out. I'm also a tad OCD about my car !!!

Me to, I'm with leadfoot, I wipe mine every 2 days so it stays clean, plus its a good indication on what's going on with your motor, based on what's coming out of the tailpipe.
