Engine light? FPR noise?

Ok, after doing the ECU swap I noticed that my check engine light went on, and stayed on. Is this normal? I couldn't figure why it would be on-since it is detecting the same things as my MP3 ecu did... Anyone have a clue?

Also, tonight after driving it for a while, on my ride home boosting got tough to accomplish and eventually it almost sounded like the FPR was whistling/gurgling. :wtf:

1stMP3inNH had this problem. What was the solution to this? wierd shtufff man. I'm tired, I'll battle those dragons tomorrow.

My CEL came on tonight. I am getting my CEL checked this morning after work to see what code it is throwing. It probably has something to do with the air temp sensor, or MAF sensor being dirty. The air temp sensor is now exposed to the open elements under the hood, when it used to be housed inside the intake tube, and it has been raining steadily all damn day! I am seriously thinking of making a hole in the rubber part of the air filter, and sticking it in there, instead of on the braket under the fileter. If it is a steady CEL, you don't have to wory too much. If it was a serious problem, it would blink at you. It did when nitrous killed my engine, and I almost s***!

I got rid of my CEL this morning by wiping my Temp Sensor, and unplugging my battery. After I plugged it back up, I started it, and the CEL went away. I went for a 10 mile drive to let my ECU re-learn my car.

I'm remembering reading something about this ina different thread. The Protege 5 has an extra piece in the intake manifold for emissions that the MP3 does not have. So, the check engine light could be the ECU trying to find the part that is missing...

FREAK! :o

I've been trying to figure out what the hell is wrong now.

-The car sounds almost like it has an exhaust leak, but not reall.
-I can't get it to boost at all, it only gets to zero vaccum and that's it

Could this be a problem with the ECU swap? I mean, the car ran great for a few hours after I did the swap, and then all hell broke loose. The check engine light has been on since I did the swap as well.

Could this be a problem with the FPR? Like I said, last night it was making some wierd noise. At idel I'm at 50psi-which is good.

Anybondy have any ideas???? :'(

Just switched ECU's out again (back to my MP3 ECU) and it did nothing. So I'm guessing it had nothing to do with the ECU.

But the noise is scaring me. there's a gurgling/leaking sound coming from the drivers side area under the hood when the gas is pressed and vaccum is reduced. Sounds like either a REAL bad exhaust leak or some kind of intake leak? But I swear on gods childeren that there is no leak there..... Will investigate more tomorrow.

It sounds like you are having the same problem I'm having.. Its called pinging and it does sound like a flutter or gargle until another car is right beside you and then you hear it loud and clear!! almost as if there are rocks bouncin around in the engine.. am I right?? I hope for your sake I'm not. I just installed the device from FM and I'm still having the same problem.

Well, I don't htink it is ping.... Only becuase the car was performing great and hten 1 second later could barely run... And I don't think Ping would occur under 0 boost.

your getting it under 0 boost?? :wtf: My car ran great for about the first week.. no pinging nice pull and then like BAM It started with the gargling sound which until I got up beside someone else I wasn't sure what it was I talked to corky and he said NO WAY should it be pinging at only 5 psi. My car has not ran worth a damn since the first week I had the turbo installed ...

Yeah, I don't even rev high enough to get boost, it just runs too poor. I'm probably overlooking a major leak somewhere. Either that or disfunction of the FPR... I'll figure it out tomorrow.

but I must say that after running the car with the P5 ECU, I heard no ping-when I usually did. That is good news. Now I just have to figure out why my car is running like complete SH#T and I'll be happy. :)

:'(

Hmmmmmm.. Wierd stuff.. Once I get this leak (or whatever) fixed I'll let you know if I hear knock witht he P5 ECU... I haven't received the fix yet, but am hoping that will also help.

Are you still running 6psi or did you go up to 8?

Guys, check your studs on your downpipe. Mine came loose, and I accually had one come out! That's where my exhaust leak came from. Also, check your EGR valve nut, and make sure it is tight. The kits comming from FM are including lockin nuts that eliminate this problem of nuts and studs comming loose. Also, try pushing your clutch down to see if the noise gets quieter. It could be throw-out bearing chatter at idle. Nothing to worry about.

My FPR makes a squeeling noise and the only fix is a replacement. It does it when close 0 PSI and when the signal tube is removed. It doesn't effect the fuel at all.

I would think you not getting boost due to a large leak in the intake side or your waste gate is stuck wide open, CALL CORKY or FM.

The P5 according to another member has another sensor the mp3 doesnot and it will always throw a cel, although FM disputed this.

Originaly I was running 6 PSI. Over the next weak the boost dropped .5 PSI a day until I only had 2 PSI boost. My I/C hose was loose at the turbo. Once fixed My car boosted right to 8 PSI not 6 PSI so it was always loose. To fix it I put the coupling on the I/C hose first then used a floor jack to push it up to the turbo real good. Also make sure you use a wrachet to tighten the hoses not a screw driver.

I only had a cel once and it happend the second day I had the kit on before I fixed the I/C hose problem. It went off a few minutes later. I bet you have an I/C leak, just about everyone to put this kit on did originaly.

Read it and understand why I'm getting the CELL....

I fixed my problem today.. Not as easy as I would have thought-most ALL of my exhaust manifold bolts were loose and ONE of the studs actually broke off, my downpipe also had a nutt missing!!!!!!!

This was insane to be because we had everything SOO tight. I guess they just should be checked and tightened every week or so. In a few weeks we are going to take the manifold off all together and put it back on with all bolts and studs super tight.

I'm good for now though-hopefully. We'll put lock tight on this next time. So much heat and pressure really can do amazing things.

Perhaps I should replace my manifold with the spoolin one ehh??? hehe I wish I had the $$

I used lock tight on every bolt stud and nut, alot and no loose bolts at all.
I check as much as possible. Except the few on the manifod I can't get to and the similar on the down pipe.

Make sure to get the real high heat stuff.

The exact same thing happend to me! I am missing my bottom stud on my downpipe to the CAT! I talked to Keith, and he said that locktite is not the way to go. You should get some locking nuts with a slightly oval pattern on the inside, not the ones with the gel stuff. The FM kits will include these.

Hmmmm... I wonder where I could find these "nutts" you talk aobut, hehe....

but yeah, also check your manifold!!! Three of mine were loose and one stud broke off completely. :o That was the leak I was speaking of. But let me say, the P5 ECU rules. No knock to speak of, and with the FM feul fix I'm thinking I'll be fine at 8 psi.
