direct tv anyone?

so my dad this morning told me that while i'm at work i should research it, even though he sits around playing solitaire all day at work, but whatever. anyways, what i have found out in my few minutes is that it has the local channels i would want, the monthly price would probably be $42 (because the $46 one totally isn't worth it and the next package is $94 or something), and my dad said they would do install for like $30 and give us 4 boxes for it. it also looks like they don't have any type of on-demand feature. we currently have normal cable, and my dad started to shop around a bit after he got an lcd tv for the kitchen that is HD and wants to see what all of the hype is about. so i'm wondering if anyone has any good or bad experiences with direct tv?

i have directv, service so far seems to be fairly well, i enjoy it, as a matter of fact, i'm researching into getting a DirecTV HDTV receiver so I can watch the HD channels on my giant projector screen

I researched it a while back. Right now I have Comcast Standard Cable and High Speed Internet. It would be about $20-30 cheaper to switch to Direct TV and DSL from Verizon and I would get an additional handful of movie channels.

HOWEVER, the standard package from Direct TV does not include NESN. I need my Redsox Baseball so that was not an option. The only way I could figure out how to add NESN was to add one of their sports packages. That was going to put the price back in-line with Comcast (a little more if I remember correctly). Add to that the fact that DSL is slightly slower than Cable and I might loose my TV connection during storms and DirectTV/DSL from Verizon doesn't seem like such a great deal.

I suppose one could just get DirectTV and keep their cable internet...but that's not the way to save money. You only save when you combine services from a single vendor.

directv was ok, it wasnt worth it for me because we never watch tv so we didnt renew. if you need the reciever or boxes, you can come take them off my hands... (& roof)

Direct TV is owned by that Bush "pole-sucker" Rupert Murdoch.... I have Dish Network and I love it. If you have it, check out Free Speech TV, channel 9415. It gives new meaning to the term "Liberal Media".

Rupert Murdoch was allowed to buy Direct TV. This rather amazing piece of the media conglomeration package disappeared under a storm of news. First the "capture" of Saddam Hussein, then under terror alerts, then under mad cow disease. So I want to back up and discuss this blow to media diversity.

First, a little background on News Corporation owned by (Rupert Murdoch) and Direct TV - formerly owned by General Motors.

News Corporation from their web site

Filmed Entertainment
20th Century Fox, 20th Century Fox Espanol, 20th Century FoxHome Entertainment, 20th Century Fox International, 20th Century FoxTelevison, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox Studios Australia, Fox Studios Baja, Fox Studios LA, Fox Television Studios.

Fox Cable
Fox Movie Channel, Fox News Channel, Fox Sports Digital, Fox Sports Enterprises, Fox Sports in Espanol, Fox Sports Net, Fox Sports World, FUEL, FX, LA Dodgers, National Geographic (US and Worldwide), SPEED Channel

Direct Broadcast Satellite Televison
Sky Italia, BSkyB, FOXTEL, Phoenix Television

Other Assets
Broadsystems, Festival Records, Fox Interactive, Mushroom Records, National Rugby League, NDS, News Interactive, News Outdoor, Nursery World.

Direct TV
Direct TV is the largest of the satellite providers serving 11 million subscribers worldwide. The merger was approved by the FCC and cost Murdoch $6.6 BILLION.

How it happened and what it means
Well it is pretty clear that Murdoch's investment in lobbying ($10 million between 1999 and 2002), and campaign investments ($200,000 so far this year and $1.8 million 2000-2002). The acquisition fo Direct TV gives Murdoch a dominating presence in all three markets of broadcast, cable, and satellite TV. (A Present for Murdoch Chester, The Nation, 12/4/03) Fox already owns local stations covering 44% of local communities (Murdoch's Mega-Media Merger, Sirota et al, AlterNet, 12/22/03).

This dominance will allow News Corporation to set rates and programming content, and have an even larger influence of rules controlling the industry. This places them in a postion similar to Wal-Mart in terms of shaping the way business is done. This reach expands beyond broadcast media, and that reach is breathtaking. Each of the companies in the Murdoch Empire are their own corporations with their own fiefdom.

Murdoch, who is not known for his "fair and balanced" approach, will have even more undue influence over the media -- not just in the US, but worldwide. The media is a tremendous force for shaping perception, culture, and decision-making. All else aside, this acquisition dramaticaly reduces the diversity of voice and perspective.

well my internet is now sbc, which is also who all phone service me and my family have is through, so we get a discount for that. i'd rather have cable internet but dsl is good enough for now. and NESN is something i can live without, although i will miss remdog

I have DirecTV with TiVo and HD. Very nice service and they were really nice when I was pissed about having to buy new equipment because of the new MPEG-4 format for HDTV.

They gave me everything for free to go to MPEG-4 format :oontz-oontz:

I got dish network, 2 boxes control 4 tvs, double dvr, 3 free months of the pay channels, installed. all for free.. and month to month its much cheaper than most everything else.

do i need to upgrade ALL my receivers to MPEG4 receivers or can i just upgrade the one connected to my projector so i can get 90" local channel HDTV action (first)

right now i only have the regular receivers; but i do have the triple-LNB multi-satellite dish already, do i also need a new dish if i want to go MPEG4??

well fook this, i just searched on dbstalk.com forum. i need a FIVE-LNB dish in addition to the MPEG4 receiver to make DC HD locals work, screw that, i'll wait til they have a special offer for existing customers so i'm not paying money for the upgrade hardwares
