An externally gated manifold requires a seperate wastegate. It is really only needed if you plan to go BIG turbo. The stock type internal gate setup is fine for stock and reworked K04's. The big turbos just overwhelm the stock gate because it is too small. Aftermarket external valves are typically much larger.
