Debadging...

I know some of you guys debadge your car's emblems and/or swap them out for the Familia ones. I had debadged my previous car - '99 Audi A4 1.8T (but left the rings) - but I did it early on, relatively quickly after purchasing it new. Since my P5 is 8 years old and almost never been garaged, I'm a bit more reluctant. I'm afraid I'll be able to still see the outline of the emblems (mazda & Protege5 on hatch lid) after removal. Anybody debadge 'later on'? I'm one for that 'cleaner' look and since some have expressed rust issues behind said emblems, I figured it may be advantageous to remove them.

Thoughts, experiences?

Thanks,

LOL wow, what a ******* coincidence!
i'm doing that RIGHT NOW as i type this..
mines an 02, and yeah you can still see the outline of the symbol & mazda word.
i've been trying to clean it up a bit, but the reason why i took my badges off were so i could black them out.

ps. you also have to fill in 2 holes as well if your gonna get rid of the badges.

Wow - coincidence indeed! Cool that you're blacking yours out (forgot about that other popular reason to remove them).

Ahh, glad I asked since I didn't realize there were two holes left behind. Makes more sense re: rust issues though. Anyway, I think I'll keep 'em on there now!

Thanks and good luck w/your project. Please post a pic or two when you're done!

Just curious, whats the best way to take the badge off without destroying it? I've got some serious rust bubbling up underneath the "PROTEGE 5" emblem that needs to be fixed...

goo gone, patience and use a flat head screwdriver with some heavy tape over top of it so you don't scratch the paint.

so just throw on some goo gone and let it sit for a little bit, then go out and pry very slowly.

On my previous car, I used a hairdryer to heat the glue and get it soft/gooey first. Then I used fishing line to get behind the emblem, slowly pushing down and simultaneously pulling back. Hope this helps.

Goo gone type of solvent and a heat source, whether it be a hair dryer or a heat gun. If neither of those work enough to loosen up the tape, get some fishing line in there as well.

how do you get rid of the left over residue after you debadge or will the goo gone take care of that

Just did this last weekend.Gotta do the mazda emblem now maybe this weekend.Took the glue off by heating it and just rubbing it off with a rag after that I took the buffer to the area that the emblem was at and walla good as new no outline.

I did mine a couple of months ago using a hair dryer and fishing line. After much tar remover and scrubbing there's no outline unless you look reeeeeeaaaaally close. I have paint matched plugs in now and want to get the holes filled and painted. I was thinking about doing the filling myself to keep the costs down, what method would you guys recommend?

You can also use Sunlight dish soap if you don't have goo gone, I find it does an excellent job in removing the sticky adhesive glue in general (I like to dilute with a little bit with water). I would generally stay away from brake cleaner on the paint.
