Cruise Control Gone

Anybody here lose cruise? Got 53K on the '5 and it won't engage at any speed. (dunno)

My first thought is the vacuum hose is cracked or fallen off. If not read through this http://protege5.ugly.net/01-20.PDF and see what you can find.

Also check where is attaches to the throttle cable. You are going to have to look under the dash and its hard to find but you can do it. Oh and also make sure the hareness is fully cliped in. If you need a new unit you can have mine.

Please don't take this as me being an ass. It's more, I've done this before. Is the little cruise control master button pushed in? It would just be easier discovering this BEFORE all of the under the dash work.

I've had my cruise control go out at around 50k... I ran complete electrical checks and it was the computer module that was bad... I got another one from someone here and it's working again... it seems that there's faulty electronics on the boxes made in 2001... the replacement I got was made in 2002 and it works good

by computer module do you mean ECU or is it something different that controls it.

I was going to say the same thing. I didn't know about that button for quite a while.

Mine, now with 56k, is intermittent. Sometimes it works and someimes it doesn't. Does not seem speed or engine temp dependent. Anyone have an idea what the control unit sells for at a dealer?

Ed, you probably put your finger on it; it's gone intermittent as Nugent's has. I'll have to see my friendly Mazda parts guy for a replacement module, I guess. Again, anyone know the price?

its over $100, **** that! get it used!

you need one SPECIFICALLY for the 2.0l *manual* or NORMAL auto protege... the 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 sport auto ones are different

Hey, my car just turned 53K (in kilometers mind you). The cruise totally stopped working one day. I check every fuse in the car, all the ones under the hood also.

I had to take the car in for a sevice any how, so I mentioned it to the guys at the dealership. Guess what happened? When I picked up the car the service advisor said "there is nothing wrong with your cruise control. It was working just fine... do you know there is an on and off button?!?!?!" And yeah - now it is totally working. I thought I was losing my mind until I told my wife. However, being the awesome person she is, she reminded me that I demonstrated to her that it wasn't working and apparently I did try that button...

Any how, maybe mine is starting to go too?! Is this a coincidence they are all going around the same time!?!?!

Any how, just wanted to let you know you aren't alone!!!

Mine's 03 & @ 41k now. It hardly ever gets used but have noticed that if I do (just to see if still alive once in awhile) I have to turn it on, set it, turn it off, turn it on & set it again before it will take over but seems to work every time if I do this. It's like I have to wake it from hibernation. If it stops working completely, I will just remove it so I can put in CP racing strut tower brace without having to modify the position of the CC unit. Yes I know that's lazy but it's a low priority task that keeps getting bumped by higher priority ones.

Mine's working again...not working again...working again. Seems it may be temp sensitive. Colder than a *****'s heart here in Denver earlier this week and no way was the cruise working.

However, it's warmed up and it kicked in this morning on the way to work; I'll check it in a few minutes on the way home.

like I said... it's a defective module

if you're still under warranty, I suggest you get it replaced free

before mine died, it I had to hold the "SET" button down for a few seconds before it even worked.... and a lot of times I had to press it twice, and even then the speed would drop before it would actually do something... after I replaced the module, it kicks in immediately after I press "SET"

I don't know if this is relative but i had a problem with mine C-Control but i accidentally fixed it by cleaning up my Ground
