cracked windshield

Mine cracked too in the first week of owning the car. The dealership picked up the cost of replacing it; deemed a stress crack.

Mine developed a 6 inch crack on the passenger side about two thirds of the way up, right from the edge. Happened over night in my garage. The dealer tried to tell me some crap about "the Mazda rep has to see it first". I told them that it was a 10 day old car and no stone chip was visible so FIX IT NOW! They ordered the windsheild and all was made well within 4 days.

I guess this is Mazda policy, cause my Dealership said the exact same thing.

I'm going to the dealer in about 2 hours...So do I have to wait for a "Mazda Rep" to look at it?..what is this crap? What do I have to do to get them to fix it asap, without all this nonsense?

The Mazda Rep needs to see it before the claim is signed off. In my case the Rep had just visited the city, then my winshield cracked. The dealership said that I'd have to wait a month before the Rep came back to the city. I said "UH...NO...I'm not waiting a month." So I complained a bit, and the dealership ended up just taking a digital picture and sending it to the Rep. to view.

Take it back to the dealer. I had my Mazdaspeed about 2 weeks, woke up one morning to a giant crack in the windshield. At first I thought i'd have to pay for it, but I noticed it didn't look like anything hit the windshield, still very smooth. So I took it back to the dealer, and got a new one, no charge, under warrenty ;)

My dealer is one of those 5-star dealers, with all kinds of award, and i did call my salesguy and give him a little crap, so maybe that helped a bit. Still, if nothing hit the windshield, i don't see how it can be your fault. Its at least worth the call ...

My experience is almost indentical to No.5. I wasnt waiting a month to get that fixed. Just put your foot down! Tell em how you're in contact with many other MSP drivers that have had the same problem. The service people at my dealership cringed when I told them I was on two Mazda forums online. lol.

My service manager told me a rock hit it, and pointed to a very tiny little speck in the middle of the crack (I thought it was just part of the crack)...so I don't know. I told him how I knew of other MSP windshields cracking, but that didn't phase him. I took it to an auto glass shop and they also said it looks like something hit the window. So now I'm gonna have to pay for it myself I guess, as I'm not going to pay my insurance detuctible for a windshield. It just seems odd that the crack is much like the other ones described on this thread...I'm not trying to get one over on the dealer, etc...I just want to make sure the right thing is done and I don't get ripped off...
The other thing that sucks is there's no other Mazda dealers around here to compare to...

I got quoted $265 for a new windshield, labor and tax for a mobile repair shop to come out and replace it. I asked about the glass and they said its OEM glass...Does this quote sound about right?

Yea, My service manager said I had to bring it in for him to look at it too. He glanced at it and said "Ok, i'll order you a new windshield". Yep, I got the backorder story too (guess its true- hopefully this one is an 'upgrade' windshield), but it came in in about 3 weeks, and now all is fine ....

I wish my service manager was that cool...he pretty much blew me off. Did your windshield just crack while it was parked or were you driving?

AFAIK it happened while i was parked. I was driving home (and I have 2 take two highways, one has trucks that I always try to avoid, the other doesn't) parked the car, don't remember any crack .... got in the car the next morning, and it had been raining. Lots of rain had flowed from the roof onto the hood, lots of rivulets.... I hit the wipers to clear them ... one doesn't move ... its the aforementioned crack. Wipers don't clear that ... Of course, I was pissed, but the rest of the story you know.

Mine cracked over night, in my garage. My service manager was good about it and ordered me a new windshield. (just like the door panels) The windshield is a different stock number than the normal Protege. Not sure on the difference.

Maybe if I told the service manager my car was parked and the next day it had a crack in it..he would of believed me..but I told the truth, that I was driving when it happened, and he screws me...

For those of you who had 'stress cracks'..did the cracks have any marks or 'stars' where it may have looked like something had hit the windshield...or were they clean cracks with no marks, etc...
I'm just trying to educate myself since I'm no auto glass expert. I wish I knew for sure since the dealer is not helping at all...

mine was totally clean, came right from under the edging on the side of the windshield. Two days later, a very small stone chip started another crack about 10 inches from the first one. I'm talking about a chip so small you had to put your nose against the glass to see it. Fortunately, the first one had no chip. I believe both cracks were stress related because I had a car that had bigger chips in the windshield that did not develop into cracks for almost two years.

That's what I tried to tell him...that why would such a small mark make such a huge crack...shouldn't that be considered a defective windshield. But I guess they don't see it like that. What if a bigger rock really had hit this weak windshield..would the whole thing break apart?

Mine didn't seem to have any marks at all. In fact, if you ran your hand or thumbnail along where the crack was, against the grain so to speak, you couldn't feel a thing. That to me said 'stress crack', and fortunatly my service manager agreed ....

I'm gonna go back to the dealer today to get a new keyless remote...maybe I'll try talking to them again about the windshield..
