2003 Mazda Protege LX black w/ carbon fiber body kit
I'm pretty much new to the forums. So I'm checking to see if there's anyone interested in composites. I'm trying to expand my knowledge so if anyone has anything that theyd like to put out there feel free.

O.K. let me rephrase that...

I design and fabricate custom carbon fiber and composite pieces. And I didn't notice any other CF threads out there. So if theres anyone out there that shares an interest.
lets chop it up...

oooo, totally custom cf work, huh? ive never messed around with carbon fiber, being as its pretty spendy to be using it to just play around with, but i started playing around with fiberglass a couple months ago and have had alot of fun making little projects. granted most of them turned out like s***, and so they got tossed, but its good experience. i did make two boxes for my 12s that came out pretty good, so im proud of them. i think my next project is going to try to fab up a custom body kit, since i dont like any of them except the sport20, but ive only heard bad things about them. itll be a long project, but ill just take my time. ill probably just yank a bumper out of the junk yard, cut it up, get some styrofoam and go from there. got any pointers or tips that might come in handy?

Haven't tried to fab a body kit "yet" cuz thats alot of variables to deal with. Closest thing I'm working on is a CF trunk thats still in the testing phase. But if youre serious about your body kit these two sites will give you some good resources for starting out.

Just remember when it comes to the CF hobby you need a lot of patience and even more money

Oh cool, never heard of netcomposites.

heres a question for you: do you NEED gelcoat if the part is going to be primed and painted anyways?

No, gel coating is mainly used for cosmetic applications. If youre going to be painting over it just use an epoxy resin (which is used in aerospace fabrication). Since looks aren't the issue you'd be better off going with strength.

Oooh make a CF bumper of the MP3/Protege5/MSP bumper. That be crazy expensive!!!

How about CF door handles (thought)

Been kicking around the idea for the door handles, I just need to get ahold of some spare parts to mold em. As for the P5, in the near future I'm going to CF the hatch. All I need is to find one for sale...

I've also been experimenting with this stuff...

It can be used in the same applications as CF...tell me what you guys think.

If you made a CF hatch I would definatly be interested in that!!! I've been looking for someone to produce it.

Dave

The CF trunk that I'm working on now for the 3rd gen protege should be completed within 6-8 weeks. But as soon as i get my hands on a P5 hatch I'll let ya know.

i like that aluminized fiberglass. it looks very very nice. it might look even better than cf on white or silver. hmmm, ideas, ideas. quite a bit more expensive than regular fg tho.

The A.F. is a little more but it works well with molding and vacuum bagging. When I get some good pieces finished i'll put them up.

im subscribing to this because i would s*** for a CF hatch. some CF door handles too man. ill take one of mine off for you if you give me a free set :) lets see some pics of your car with the body kit

Actually I have the handles already so I don't need you taking your door apart. But thanks for the offer.

#17 Thats what I'm doing instead of the CF handles, I like the clean look.
#18 WHAT UP D!!!! PM me and I'll get you my number.
#19 If you want one when there done I'll put you on the list
