jred321 said:we have a minimum requirement of 40 hours per school year per brother of community service. you don't join just to do this (there are service fraternities like APO if you want to do this), but it helps many people make the decision to know that we aren't solely about partying. i would hope it isn't just the debauchery and parties that draw pledges in. we get to know the people before giving bids during rush. again, our school is different than most in that we have 1 rush period per year, freshmen aren't allowed in our house at all until b term (we have 4 terms per year), and they aren't allowed to drink or be in our house after 10 until the end of rush, so their decision is based on the people in the house and what the house stands for, not for our parties because they haven't experienced any.
i didn't know i was trying to fill some void by joining a frat with a bunch of people who i was already friends (big soccer frat) with and would be whether i joined or not. granted, not as close friends, but still friends. it seems to me like it makes you feel better about not joining one by putting others down who are in frats, and by doing so you are making yourself feel included in the group of kids who are too cool to join frats, aka those who are closed minded on the subject. i don't get how joining a frat makes one not independent minded anymore, all of the sudden they are a different person and will do what everyone else does? i don't drink, everyone in this house does. i don't party much, everyone else in this house does. i'm into cars, there are maybe 3 other people in this house who like cars, none to the extent of me. I must not be independent minded.
i don't think anyone is cool because they join a frat, there are plenty of not cool kids in our house, and plenty of whole houses on campus that aren't cool, and plenty of cool kids (well not a ton at this school) who aren't in frats, i could care less either way, being cool is a personal thing, not a frat thing.
the statement was what i have observed on many threads like this. the only people who bash frats are those that are not in them and have never taken the time to really get to know what frat life is about. they mostly go from generalizations, things they've heard (you aren't going to hear about the good houses), movies they've seen, never from personal experience. the people who do have personal experience won't say bad things about the life because they don't have anything bad to say about it. there are plenty of meathead houses (like the football house on our campus) who have the "i am mightier than thou" attitude, but each house is different, and we really only have 1 or 2 houses like that out of 12 on campus.
companies require community service out of their employees, as do many other organizations. if people only did it when they felt like it, many charities would be non existent. you think bill gates giving millions of dollars for computer and stuff is out of the kindness of his heart? it's a big tax write off. plain and simple. but we are only required to do 20 hours per year by national, but we know we can easily do more, so our officers decided we should do more. is it p.r.? yep, but it's better than doing nothing at all, like we would do if we weren't required to.SeminoleMan said:Requiring community service of your members is mandated to help improve the image of the fraternity and to make your charter happy. It's not done out of the kindness of your hearts. It's an attempt to put a good face on and in an attempt to distance yourselves from the typical frat "party" image. IS THAT NOT FAKE?
I can appreciate your defending something you can appreciate, but it's the ol "bad apple" ruins the bunch saying. If your frat is that one frat that is diff, that's cool.
Eventually you'll have to socialize with the other 90% of society and you'll find that the rest of the world is far more interesting and more inclusive as a whole. We won't make you pay dues to boot.
