Cobb AP Discussion Thread

yes i did calibrate it thats why i said that and yes it is possible that my stockers are fried. as i stated before i just bought all new sensors and will be posting my findings soon the one sensor is a back order from mazda and will be in either monday or tuesday. on my way to VW right now to get the innovate sensor...

Does anyone find Cobb's specification for calibrating the MAF sensor confusing? I've never done much electronic tuning (carbureted race car experience only) and I have read it several times and still can't get my head wrapped around it.

Anyone have it mapped out in easy to follow steps?

This is one thing I really need to do to my map on the car.

In other news, I found on Cobb's forum that they are looking for testers for a new feature on the AP, but they won't say.

Its not as hard as it seems. Cobb directions are not that great.

First you have to do step 2 in the guide. Make sure you accelerate really slow because you have to capture the break point for the MAF calibrations.

Speed6 break points are:0-5 g/s
5.01-18
18.01-31
31.01-69
69.01- full sensor range.
The break points are where the ECU makes changes to you LTFT.

Once you get the data log look at your LTFT from those different ranges of the mass airflow.

For example. If your LTFT are plus 11 in a range of 5.01-18 you would highlight those cells and hit "M" for multiplier and enter 1.11.
If you LTFT are plus 20 in 31.01- 69 you would highlight those cells and press "M" and put in a multiplier of 1.20. If they are minus in those ranges you would enter .89 for the minus 11 and .80 for the minus 20.

This is the way I have been doing it. My LTFT were 11.72 in some ranges and 9.84 in others. Now I have them down to 1.4

If Im wrong someone please correct me

Im guessing they would. Why not do it yourself? What mods do you have? I have a MSCAI,ETS,TIP and Testpipe. If yours are similar I can email you my map.

Hello all - I've owned my '06 MS6 since August of '07 and have been visiting the forum here ever since but didn't become a registered member until now. I've reached a point where reading up on things just isn't enough, I need help and direct interaction with you all at this given point in my moding process. Maybe I'm supposed to post first in the 'welcome' section, if so, I apologize for my failure to do so, as I'm also rather new to forums in general. Anyway, to the point (as it applies to this thread), I recently purchased the Cobb AP. The mods I'm currently running are the Cobb intake, ETS 3.25 TMIC, SU 2.5 testpipe, and the Magnaflow Catback. I'm currently running the the Stage 1 + SF 91 octane map on my car because it is the only map available on the AP that most closely matched my mods upon installing it. However, it does appear that I should/could be running a stage 2 map, or at very least a stage 1 map for 93 octane. My problem right now is that I'm having trouble, for whatever reason, downloading the stage 2 maps, or any maps for that matter, onto my PC and then to the AP Manager and then to the AP itself. When I download (save) the maps off of mzdspd.com I'm unable to open them as my PC doesn't recognize the file. What am I doing wrong? Please feel free to respond to me as the novice and newb that I may well be. Any and all input would be much appreciated!! Thanks in advance for your help. I'm very frustrated!! -BH

Hey BH and welcome. I believe the files are compressed. I don't remember exactly but I think they may be .rar files. You should use google to download a program called Winrar. You then have to import the file into the AP manager. Sorry this is so short, but I'm typing on an iPhone. I hope this helps!

I fried my ecu with the cobb ap. just make sure NO lights are on and all the doors are closed when u flash! FYI

Thanks for the info Blenercloud!! I downloaded Winrar, now I just have to get the map file(s) onto the Accessport Manager. Maybe I'm moderately computer dyslexic but I'm having trouble accomplishing this task. Any input? Anyone? And a couple other questions:

1) Are the maps on mzspd.com 'safe'? Any input from Cobb on their design? Are these all Access Tuner Pro maps?
2) With the mods I'm running, which map(s) would be most suitable?
3) Should I be expecting the poor gas mileage that I'm getting currently running Stage 1 +SF 91 octane w/ my mods?
4) Off topic - how often (on average) should the Cobb intake be cleaned?

Thanks in advance for any and all input!!

1) Yes, they are safe. (I don't have any other information about the other two questions.)
2) You should be running the Stage2 93 v101p 900rpm idle.
3) Yes, poor fuel economy is expected and is my experience with removing exhaust backpressure and running a Stage1 map. If you do exhaust modifications, you really need to go to Stage2. With just a test pipe on Stage1 I dropped to 19mpg. When I moved to Stage2 I'm pushing 25.5 city and almost 34 highway.
4) I would clean the filter every second or third oil change. That is probably even 'too often', but it keeps you in the habit of cleaning it.

As far as your problem importing goes, here is a walk-through:
1) Unzip the map by right-clicking on it.
2) Open AP Manager
3) Click File and then go down to "Import Maps to Library"
4) In the dialog box, go to the directory where you unzipped the map and select it.
5) Refresh the map list in AP Manager by either selecting your AP (on the left menu bar) or close out the program and re-open it all together.
6) Once your new map is in the "APMgr Library", click on it and drag it over to your Cobb AP in the menu on the left.

After that, you should be good to go!

You've been incredibly helpful Blendercloud! Much appreciated!! I'm rather new to 'tuning' and I'm just trying to maximize the performance of this car (my mods) while also maintaining safety, as it is my daily driver and want it to be for a while. Ok, so I think I was able to successfully download the appropriate stage 2
map(s) into the library and then onto my AP. If the map(s) show up on the 'map list' when your AP is connected to the computer then that means you've successfully loaded the map(s) onto the AP and they can then be flashed onto the car correct? Just a few other questions - I have Denso plugs on the way, should I wait until they're installed to flash a stage 2 map? And just to be sure, with the Cobb SRI, ETS 3.25, SU testpipe, and MagnaFlow catback you'd recommend which specific stage 2 map? Shouldn't I go with the map that integrates the TMIC or no? Why is the 900 rpm so significant?

Sorry about that, I didn't give you a full name for the map. You should be using the map titled "Stage2 93 v101p +TMIC 900rpm idle". The 900rpm idle is important because it reduces vibrations and resonance inside the car if you have stiffer motor mounts (which you should get) as well as helps reduce smoking due to faulty turbo seals while idling.

You don't have to wait for the colder step plugs, but it will surely help with your KR values.

If the map shows up on the map list while you have your Cobb AP selected (on the left menu) through the AP Manager then you've done it correctly.

how did you manage that?

sounds like his battery died while he was flashing....

I remember when i flashed my car outside in 99* heat... I thought that if i opened the doors or rolled down the windows it would mess up the ecu.. i sat in my super hot car, windows up/doors closed for about 10 minutes waiting on my AP. I was completely drenched in sweat... finally i found my cobb box, called them, and they said i could have had the car windows down the whole time... just make sure the battery didnt die... FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

CN: i sat in a hot car, getting drenched in sweat all for nothing

can the ap be used on orther cars, for example, can i clear a check engine light on a legacy GT or use the monitor mode?

So I'm probably going to order mine tonight or tomorrow (yay for travel pay that I don't need!!!!) and, after reading this thread, I see that a lot of my questions have been answered. My only remaining one is...does the AP come with an instruction manual? Silly I know, but I don't want to screw something up! :p
