busted BCs!

yeah, it sounds like i'm not the first one to experience this. just looks like a weak spot in the design. but like badbandar mentioned there might be ways to avoid extra stress on this spot... just sucks that it's even an issue.

yup, BC includes their own(shorter) endlinks for the front end but the rears are stock. there appears to be no damage/bending of the stock endlink. it was clearly stronger than the bracket it was connected to.

Just curious but are they having this problem across the board? Like all manufactures? Or is this just a Protege problem? Cause I'm thinking this has more to due with the craptastic rear sway bar and its mounting position then the BC's. Stock ES struts are known to break with upgraded sway bars for the same reason.

i'd also be curious to know if this is a protege thing or a BC thing....
i broke mine like that twice already... once on the passenger side... then once on the driver side... first one i got was a freebie cuz i was still under warrenty... second one i had to pay about $70 with shipping included...
i mentioned to them that it was the second time i had the tab break... and advised them that they should revise it somehow... and the person on the phone said it was revised... when i got my second one in the mail... it looked exactly like my old one but not broken
yes it does suck...
i think it's a bc thing... cuz i had on tokico blues for longer than i had my bc's... my tokico tabs never broke

well, it's sounding like a problem that more and more people have had. too bad since my BCs have been great in every other way. i'm sure this will scare some people away from buying them but maybe for good reason...

same exact thing happened to my stock ES strut. as a matter of fact it looked exactly like the first picture. we took the piece that broke off, welded it back on, and reattached everything. on the test drive, i made it about two blocks before i heard a loud bang. looked under the car and saw that the part of the endlink that connected to the strut had shattered, but the weld stayed intact. a few days later i noticed the part that was welded back on was missing again lol. idk what the deal is, but im about to replace all the struts with a set of blues and we'll see what happens.
It looks like a fatigue crack, so welding might just buy you a little time, but won't be a permanent solution... BC must have made a poor choice in materials/dimensions for these shocks, or had some QC issues.
I'd also be nervous re-welding the tab not knowing the alloy of the original metals or their heat-treatment (or lack thereof) but I guess breaking it a second time wouldn't be any worse than breaking it the first time... just my two cents.

Maybe someone who has them should bring to their attention the problem that any strut with weak endlink mounting points are know to break, OEM and Aftermarket. Thicker material is needed almost to the point of overkill...lol
And the reason IS because of sway bar and its mounting points to the frame. To much stress is put on the Endlinks (which is why they always clunk) and there for to much stress for weaker endlink mounting points. The subject has been beaten to death so I'm sure there are threads about the issue (going to look myself to try to better explain) but there was a bracket made by Delsing Motorsports now its made by AXR which solves the problem.

ha! i actually have the AXR brackets and my rear tab broke... so it clearly didn't help in the least. but it did fix the clunk... hehe.
