Bike Rack?

Ok, another question from the new guy...

Who makes the best/cleanest looking bike rack to mount on the stock P5 rails?

I want a fork mount w/ lock on the front side...

Thule/Yakima? others.....

TIA

They are both great brands. I personally have Thule and have been selling them for years. If you do a search I posted an in depth fitting for the Thule system and I believe someone else posted what Yakima to go with. Best of luck with the racks. The car still looks sweet with the rack on. Downside (at least with Thule, probably Yak as well) is that when the rack is on you can't open the tailgate all the way. The tray gets in the way, not a big deal but if you forget and smash the spoiler into it it probably will be a big deal.

Personally I think the Yakima looks better. It sits a bit lower and I have a red P5 and their racks are black/red. I work at REI and we sell both. The advantage to thule is they make the 889 that will fit right on your rack for the bike and that's all you need. Bikes will be all that you can carry and I'm not sure if the wheel ork will fit up there. I'm pretty sure it won't because you'd still be using your factory bars. Thule people can answer that question. Yakima's suggested solution tells you to get Qtowers, and Qclips. This suggestion comes over the side of your car. Is more expensive, but MUCH more versatile because then the fairing fits which reduces wind noise SSOOOOOOO much! If you want leave both wheels on and have a full upright mount you can get the 24H mighty mounts (actually made for subaru's) and the rack. Also just as a side note the 24H's will fit around our racks to hold the buttondown 4 & 6 snowboard racks without getting a whole system. I made a custom fitting using the Mazda mounting and the top of the 1a raingutter towers. I will upload pics when I get home.

I use the Thule 899xt and have plenty of clearance for the hatch to open all the way..

Alex Mack,

The 899xt is the full upright, correct? If so you have clearance because the bike gets positioned in front of the front roof bar. Make sense?

Banned bandit,

You have clearance because you do not have the factory rack and therefore are using the traditional "fit kit" clamps. The setup you have is good in the sense that you can purchase any Thule component and it will work fine. However, for those that want to utilize the factory roof rack and do not want the full upright (i.e. take off the front wheel and put it in your trunk or buy the wheel carrier) the tray impedes the tailgate from opening all the way.

pictures of factory / yakima rack

I don't like having the clips hanging over my doors. Using the Yakima 1a towers you can use the factory supports to make a full yakima rack.

check out pics. clearance with a bike is fine. Most snowboards are fine. With ski's the hatch does not open all the way.

Yes, I am aware of that, I used to work as a Thule rep, and before that i sold and fit both Thule and Yak racks for a number of years. Even with the 889, you should be able to cut the tray with a hack saw if it's to long, unless you have a long wheelbase on your bike. I've never had a problem mainly because the only bikes that go on my roof are 20"..

Mazda now offers a bike rack that fits the factory rails. Very nice. Have'nt seen any thing posted on here about it.

Peeps in Canada correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that from day one Canadian dealers have had this rack available. It's merely the Thule rack with Mazda nameplate on it.

Could be? I'm assuming the pictures are a canadian car. that being the case the rack that is in the states fits on the main luggage rack supports, which the car in the photos that I saw didnt have. I Know it was just a few months or so ago that they were made avail. here thru Mazda.

I have a Thule 889 which mounts to the existing roof rack. It looks awesome because the factory rack is, well, factory. The hatch opens fully and the spoiler just contacts the end of the rail. It also has an integral locking mechanism instead of a standard quick release.
