** AWR Front Motor Mount Help **

so about 3.5 - 5 weeks ago my buddy and i put in the AWR front motor mount. the stock mount was a b**** to get off (the thing was in there tight), and getting the AWR in was tough until we figured you had to jack up the transmission a bit to be able to get the bolt through.

everything seemed as tight as could be, and i was fairly satisfied ... until i started driving ...

i've heard many people say the mount reduces the 'bucking' dramatically, but the bucking in my car has actually increased significantly, and almost everytime i take off from a stop, there is a horrible vibrating/rattling sound from the mount. i recently went back under and tried tightening everything again, and they seemed about as tight as they could get.

i searched the forums, and the best i could gather was that the mount needed 'break-in' time. i don't know how long that period is, but it needs to be over quick. my dad was in the car with me today and heard the noise and is now very concerned. i told him it was the mount, but i carefully left out the small fact that it's the AWR and not the stocker.

i'm heading to the dealer tommorrow to have KB bushings put in (b/c the current bushings are damn near impossible to get out - i'm stripping the nut bad), and while i'm there i'm gonna have em take a look at the mount and see what the problem might be.

is there a possibility that i put it in wrong? the mount looked fairly symmetrical and didn't seem to have a FRONT or BACK, so it just went in.

thanks for any productive help anyone can offer.

which mount did you get? AT or MT? the MT is stiffer, maybe the AT one would suit you better. I had hard engine mounts on my cavalier and i thought my rear view mirror was going to fall off. as long as its tight, i think thats how the mount may be. its depends on the durometer (sp) of the bushings , how much vibes you will get.

i installed a front AT mount a couple months ago and it went in pretty easily except to break the three factory tightened bolts loose. had no trouble installing it and 90% engine lash is gone. once in a while i get a bucking when shifting from first to second gear on low RPM's and vibration is a little harsh on cold mornings when engine fully warmed. i enjoy it though and have had no trouble with it.....

You have just traded wheel hop for vibration. It is not a comfort mod it is a performance mod. You don't want your engine bouncing everywhere if you are trying to get a good launch. What were you expecting it to do?

sorry about wrong section, t3ase.

i got the MT mount ... fyi

i wasn't commenting on the vibration. the noise that i'm talking about is just that - a noise. i know what it is to - it's the mount rattling viciously on take off. it sounds like the mount should tightened more, more secured to the motor.

any kind of spacers or something that would work?

the vibration at idle doesn't bother me - it's what i was expecting.

ya - i notice also.

i understand the increased vibration, but bucking no equal vibration. what gives ...

i saw in some post that having the front mount in blew out the rear one, could that be a posibility? have u checked the rear mount to see what condition its in? im guessing here.

when i go in tommorrow (dealership), i'm gonna get em to get the car up on a lift so we can take a look under the car. hopefully it's a situation of tightening. i'll make sure to check the rear mount.

the noise really needs to go away though. it seriously sounds like the mount is rattling loose. no bueno.

si, si, no bueno. Keep us posted im interested to hear what happends. good luck!

thanks for the luck.

worst case is i say take out the awr and put in the stocker (which i don't have, meaning i'd have to buy another - dammit).

I'm sure you got the two on the bottom tight because they are easy access. Are you sure you got the one that goes horizontally through the circular red part tight. I know that on the starboard side of your car the bolt has to line up correctly (it is square if I remember correctly). Kind of reaching, but it has to be something simple.

i completely agree it has to be something simple. the mount (which itself has no moving parts = easy to fix) only has those 3 nuts and the one thru-bolt. the problem is a rattle. solution can't be that hard with all that info. i'm not gonna let a tiny piece of metal get the best of me.

After I filled my motor mounts, the shifter vibrated a lot more as did other random things... To track the noise down, start emptying out your car and make sure that it's nothing in the radio pocket, console, glove box etc... If it's coming from under the hood, make sure the battery's secure and the STB is nice and tight. If you drive your car hard it could be the rear mount, but then there's going to be more than noise. When I filled my mounts, I also used a big torque wrench and tq'd my mount to the subframe at 100-110lbs/ft and tq'd the mount-to-engine bolt to about 85lb/ft. Did you use a torque wrench to make sure everything's secure? If it is then it's just a noise from the stiffer mount and may go away as the mount adjusts.

does 'fill' = install? i put my mounts in using a basic wrench and my own strength (which is comparative to a 10-year-old girl).

about how long does it take for the mount to adjust? is this really a time thing, or a mileage thing?

How did you take it off? I'm reasonably strong and there is no way I can unscrew the side bolt (the 2 bottom ones no prob), I even tried with a lever (2 ft long) and NADA!

ya it took my friend and i a while to notice (we actually saw trying to get the AWR in), but you have to have another jack or something to take pressure off the transmission, i think it was (i'm probably wrong, i can't remember). the main idea is that you have to jack up whatever part it is so that removal of the old mount is easier, and so the thru bolt on the awr will go through in a straight fashion (b/c it won't go through with no underbody support).

that was horribly confusing, i'm sure. when i go to the dealer this afternoon, i'll head back while it's up on the lift and try to snap a few pics or something.

actually that makes sense, I figured that there must be pressure on that bolt (from the tranny, I guess)
