Auto Transmission Shifter

Installed new carpet in my recently purchased 2000 Protege ES. While taking off gear shifter knob, I noticed two wires that run parallel to shaft but were not attached. Do they serve a purpose?. I do have a small button below the large button that allows me to switch gears. What is the purpose of the small button? Should these wires connect to it?

Thanks for your help.

The small black button is for turning your OD (overdrive) off and on. A light should appear around the gauge area when it is turned off.

How do I go about re-attaching the wires to the OD button. They did not break at removal. Knob ame off too easy. Not sure how long they were disconnected. One idea that I had was to add two wires to the OD button and then splice the existing wires to the new ones.

The two wires for the OD are soldered to the black button located on the shifter. If you follow the two wires under the centre console a bit more you should see a white connector that will allow you to take the wires out of the car. If you take a small thin tip screwdriver you can pry the black thumb switch out of the shifter handle and reattach the broken lines. Mine broke off one day when I was cutting down the shifter.

Just what I was looking for.
