AT not going into 5th gear

Hi all. I've got a 2006 3 S Touring and have had some weird problems with my automatic trans. After driving uphill for several miles with the vehicle in 4th gear (in D, not M mode), after I crest the hill and start going downhill, the trans won't go into 5th gear again. This has happened on three separate occasions in the 1.5 yrs I've had it (it's now got almost 25K miles)

I have tried stopping and shutting down the car and restarting it; putting it in Neutral then back into Drive while it's rolling; putting it in M and trying to change gears (it won't go up or down a gear in M when it's acting up). The only thing that seems to work is to turn it off and let it sit overnight. A weird element of it is that when it's stuck in 4, if I put the stick into M, the gear indicator goes blank!

I took it to the dealer and- surprise- they can't find anything wrong. Anyone else have anything like this happen to them? It's a great car, but having to drive long distances with the trans stuck in 4 on the freeway is not good.

Thanks!
Mike

Have you checked your trans fluid. Maybe a stuiped thing, but you said you have to wait overnight...i am not a hardcore mechanic, but your talking about long driving, etcc....trans fluid could be doing something when the fluid is hot.

Try taking it to the dealer after you have drivin the car a long time. Also, I would keep taking it back saying the problem is occuring, at least then you have it on file that you are bringing it in for that issue. Its hard for a dealer to find those intermitten problems.

There's a 5th gear!?!

Edit: Disregard this post. I was being a drunken jackass! My wife's 2.0 only has 4 gears though :)
