Any photographers in here?

My beef is that a lot of my photos play with different light, most of it low. Stepping down to f/8 gets me some nasty slow shutter speeds, which I can't handhold. Seems kind of silly that you have to step it down to f/8 to get a crisp shot. I just want a faster lens that I can get the same crispness from...

that photo was taken in direct sunlight and with an external flash. Talk about a ton of light...

I wish I had ponied up for the 1.4 instead of the 1.8... I just couldn't resist $80 for a pretty good lens.

Fortunately for you, you can recover every dollar spent on the 1.8... and go pick up a 1.4...

yep, but I don't do much portrait type stuff, so that is why I favor zooms.

as I learn more about what I'm doing I'm definitley picking up a tele zoom to start shooting some other stuff, but the main motivation for even getting the SLR were to shoot my car, the dogs (which are surprisingly sedentary), and then just random walk-around family stuff. For now, between the 50 and the 18-55, I'm pretty well covered.

yep, I hear you. I got mine... well, I don't know why I got mine, but I've definitely gotten really interested in using it to its fullest potential in the last year or 2. My girlfriend likes taking pictures too, so it's something that we can do together. My next purchase will be a 50d. That way, we'll each have a body to use. After that, I'm planning on either a 24-70 f2.8, a 70-200 f2.8, or a 100-400 f3.5-5.6. I'm not sure which, but it will definitely be an L.

oh, and another thing, I like the bokeh much better on the 50mm 1.8 when it's stopped down to 2.8 also. the highlights go from blobs to cool looking pentagon things. example:

or for double that you could own a DSLR setup... that kinda money for a rental is crazy!

It's not unheard of. Renting a 5D MkII here is 120/day already. And a 70-200mm 2.8L IS is about 50/day. This is just from a local camera shop.

I dont agree with that quite, the dof is very shallow so you have to very careful how its used because you will only get a very small part sharp

but thats my experience with the lens, its not that its not sharp its that its not focusing properly sometimes, thats why when you step it down your getting more dof and it looks sharper

you have to be careful with the focus plane when shooting wide open for sure

Definitely. I explained this a few pages back about aperture affecting the focus. Imagine shooting a 1.2 or 1.4 haha. It's even harder.

man thats crazy, you can rent that lens for 80 bucks a week from the online US ones

I rented a flash this summer while in nfld they charged me like 60 bucks or something for one day !!! they said you can pay the difference which was like nearly 400 bucks and I said umm yeah I can buy a brand new one in the US for 250 bucks

I want to rent a 800mm but its like 800 bucks a week + crazy shipping
