Any photographers in here?

I love the IS feature! this is handheld at 1/6 second:

I shake way too bad to get something like that without IS at that shutter speed.

a pretty large lynx, I was in the cage with him, I thought he was going to eat me once lol

as you can see by this picture it was close, the handler stopped it then because I didnt realize he was about to eat my lens lol I couldnt figure out why I could not focus on it but then quickly realized its nose was nearly touching the lens

That's a nice park and great pics. I was at a renaissance fair not long ago and they had the largest cat in the entire world. It's a Liger.

Photo shoot with my P&S at 25-30 yards away.

These are excellent dude. I would love to do that at the zoo next year. How did you get in to cage with them? I wonder if the zoo would let me in. hmmmm

lol seriously I want to see what you can do with some good equipment! Next time you have a good photo op coming, you should rent a d50 and an L lens and see what you come up with... it would cost you like 2-300 for a weekend probably, but the pictures and experience would be well worth it!

or for double that you could own a DSLR setup... that kinda money for a rental is crazy!

you can't own a DSLR setup worth owning for $4-600. The lowest body I would go for is a D50, and the body alone is like $1000. Heck, I wouldn't even buy a $4-600 lens at this point.

idk how a Nikon D50 compares, but my 20D is a FINE starter body, which highly doubt I'll outgrow any time soon... I have 2 batteries, a 4 gig card, a 50mm 1.8 Mk1, and the 18-55 IS, and my total invested is $500. Honestly, I firmly believe this is the best setup I could have bought to break into it. shooting full frame wouldn't do me personally any more benefit than a crop body.. and honestly, I believe they should use the 50mm 1.8 for the kit lens.. I don't enjoy shooting the 18-55 nearly as much, though the versatility is nice. Professionals, and people that have taken 20K+ shots are the only ones who will benefit from L glass, so thats not even worth doing until MUCH later (I doubt I ever spend more than $300 for a lens).. its just not worth sticking that kind of money into for me.

what? where is a D50 anywhere near that price? it wasnt that much when it was new

like wagon said you can buy a decent starter setup for that price range, the camera is a small part of the price the lenses is where the costs are

and at the end of the day the majority of it is technique unless the camera is limiting something, like fps , iso etc, but for average person thats not an issue most of the time

it was not a zoo, its a nature preserve, I went there with a paid photo group :)

I think most zoo's will do it but its very expensive and very limited I would imagine

they had many other animals as well, like a wolverine ... the damn thing was crazy they would not have had enough money for me to get in the cage with it, the thing started frothing at the mouth when I went to the cage lol

they had a fully grown cougar that I would have went in with but they wouldnt let me

it was a pretty crappy day so I had to crank up the iso and I definitely missed many opportunities because one min the lighting was good and then it was crap

but I will be going back for sure, the only prob is I live 7hrs from it lol

wait are you talking nikon D50 or canon 50D? cause obviously no L lens is going to work on a nikon unless you have special convertors ;)

in that case yeah the 50D is just under 1k, personally I would get the 40D for much cheaper... in fact I am selling mine cause right now I have a 1D MKII, 40D, 5D & 7D and I dont need them all lol

you wont be long and you will want it ;) I have only been doing it for around 2 years really and I have 5 L lenses right now and I have already gotten rid of a few, my next one will probably be the 800mm :D

.... if I win the lottery lol I had a damn hard time convincing myself on the 500L which was damn expensive enough, but really of all the 15 or so lenses I have had this is by far my fav one and the one I use the most
