Another Winter Tire Thread

:
2003 Black Mica MSP
I posted a thread in the other tire and rim section but I really did not get any responses, and I figured that I would get the opinions of the other MSP guys. I just got a set of beautiful P5 rims that I am planning on using for the winter. What tires do you think would be good for winter driving. Opinions on what your using would be great as well as some prices. Especially if you use P5 rims for winter use too. Thanks everyone.

Ping and I both will be using 205/55/16 Semperit Sportgrips this winter with P5 rims. It's a great combination at a great price from tires.com.

Are they around the same size as the MSP tires and rims, as far as height goes, just wondering because im curious to see how far my mph's are going to be off.

Matt

Also just went to the site and they dont have them on there, or atleast when I plug in the size of the tire that you have.

Matt

Ok just found the tire but they did not have them listed for that size. Maybe I should try and find a Discount Tire around me.

www.tirerack.com they have an winter tire option thing where you can pick your own package. i got 2 205/55/16 bridgestone blizzak ws-26 (like $130 each) or whatever they're called for the front with steelies which were like $44 each and in the back i still have 2 pirelli winterice 215/45/17 tires on my stock wheels.

Just a quick note to all of the "performance buffs" if you are trying to perform in the ice and snow this winter, go with a skinny tire, do yourself a favour, how bout 15" wheels and 185 or 195-65 r15 tires. Need help lemme know.

on the 16's 205-55-16. Ideally a 195-55-16 would be better but i don't think it exists.
Redline is right, for 15's, any of the following sizes work:
206-60-15
195-60-15
195-65-15
185-65-15
I have 205-60-15 Pilot Alpin 2's and they are awesome.

Well I cant go with the 15 inch rims because I just got the P5 rims for my winter rims, so would the 205 not be a good choice to go with then.

Where to get Steelies

where/what are good steelies?

I know you aren't in the Toronto area but I am sure you can find wheels anywhere you go, roughly about 75-90 a piece. Hey anyone out in TORONTO that needs some gimme a call at 416-292-1431 name is Kevin. Turn around time is usually one day.

Look forward to hearing from you.

cool i figured as much. i was wondering if there was a brand name but ill just go to town fair tire and ask them. thanks.

I remember reading in the MSP addendum booklet that came with the car it said to avoid using smaller sized wheels and tires for the winter to avoid any issues with the LSD or something like it.

These tires are great for the price. I use them in a 195/60/14 (PR5) and they are great. They have been two winters and through lots of snow in the first one. They do great on dry pavement and handle pretty well for a snow tire. they are european so I bet that has something to so with that.

i probably have about two winters left on them. I will make sure to take it easy on them. they are soft and it is so easy to light them up with a NA.

great tires though.......discounttire.com

I'm not sure what state Fort Collins is in, but where ever it is you probably don't get any more snow than I do in Wisconsin. So personally if I was you I'd go with 205/55/16s. Yes 195 or 185 width would be better "in snow"...but even in Wisconsin I'm often driving on dry pavement or ice, and a wider tire is better on those surfaces. I think tires.com didn't have the 205/55/16 Semperits last year either until sometime in November for some reason....I can't remember for sure. You might want to call them and ask what the deal is. That tire is a little bit bigger than the stock Bridgstones but for me my speedometer read about 2MPH too fast with the Bridgestones, so when the Semperits are on there my speedo is actually MORE accurate!

Honestly the Semperits handle great IMO, perform pretty well in snow, and are super cheap at a mere $75 a tire! Hard to beat!

What Should I Use

Matt,

It is hard to find a winter tire with the same dimensions that would be effective, but I would recommend going with a tire that would maintain the overall diameter of what you have. That is to go with a p215/45r16 it is true that a skinnier tire works better in the snow, but you don't want your speedo out as well. This works out to a 23.6 overall diameter as does the dunlop sport 5000 @ P195/50r16. Let me know if you need some Blizzaks I can get them for you.
