P5 2002
What's up guys and gals? I just bought a 2002 P5 and I am loving the experience so far. I like the style of this car and I look forward to talking to many of you about what you have done to the car. I have and had been a VW lover forever. I just sold a 1996 Jetta GLX VR6 that I have been the only owner of. I stumbled across this P5 and I love it already. I will tell you what I want to do and you guys direct me where I should buy this stuff. I live in Charlotte, NC so if there are some P5 owners on here in the area feel free to help me out. I will definitely get a cold air intake...probably put a different audio system in.( Looking at the Pioneer IN DASH Radio ready CD/MP,double din..6.5 screen...dont know the model no.) I DO like the darker looking tailights. I may tool around with the engine. So help me out if you have any suggestions.. I also work for Apple Computers..so I can aid in the ipod and/or computer area in matters pertaining to Apple. SO thanks in advance.. and if anyone is selling anything let me know..this car is bone stock.... (thumb)

Welcome! Here is info I try to pass onto all the newbies who join up.

Right after I got my P5, I got the intake. You can get a short ram intake (SRI), which is what I have. Others have cold air intakes (CAI) They are about the same on ebay, but you may also opt for name brand. I have the ebay...

The next thing I did was get rid of those god forsaken Dunflop piece of s*** stock tires. I hydroplaned within the first week or so I owned the P5. I ended up with the Yokohama AVS ES 100's. 205-50-16's on the stock rims. After 23000 miles, they were through, so I got aftermarket wheels, and Kumho Ecsta 711 205-40-17s. There are a bazillion threads about tires. These I highly recommend for rainy climates. (Bottom line, get out of the stock tires before you have a problem!)

I just got (after 2.5 years of owning my car) a Racing Beat exhaust. I got an insanely good deal on it. It is on the higher end of the pricing range, but you can score one used at a good rate if you are on the forum within the .245 seconds someone posts it for sale used. They run in the high $400 range new. There is a Mazda Sport (Mazdaspeed) exhaust which is also popular, but people have complained of droning, or an annoying sound at freeway speeds. The Racing Beat does not do that. But there are a bazillion threads about the exhaust subject too, look them up.

Then there is the tinting of windows, a stereo, springs/shocks/body kit, carbon fiber everything, etc you will see around here for sale.

Short shifter is next on my list. Kartboy makes a great one, I have seen it in person. The shifter bushings are a must. Get them no matter what. Huge difference in shifting!

I found by moving to synthetic engine and transmission fluids, I get better mileage, and it shifts smoother too. So easy to do, it is worth it.

One more thing you should consider when you mod is a header. OBX and Ractive are the most common. I just installed the Ractive, and love the HP gains. Be sure to look up the Spark Plug non-fouler trick for the 2nd o2 sensor. It prevents the CEL from coming on.

Well, good luck, and check out the for sale section, and work with the Authorized Venders and sellers! Oh, search for threads about a question you might have. Most likely, it has been covered.<o>

Do you type this every time? Or do you have a "common posts" file somewhere that you copy/paste this stuff from?

I was typing the same thing over and over for a while. Then I saved a Word document, so it is a copy/past thing. I do refresh it every now and then. I think it hits a good portion of what I learned about my car. And thanks to this forum, I met a bunch a guys who love their Mazdas, and found ways to deplete my checking account for the better good of the P5.

Welcome to the Mazda forums. Now that you have a P5 I shall say " Welcome to your new addiction"

This little car just grows on ya. Don't know why but it just does. All my other cars have been big muscle cars or big 4X4 trucks. But now I just want to drive my P5 just for the hell of it.

Any way like others have said use the search button up top. Also check out the how to section. There is a ton of good stuff there including a bunch of free or cheap mods.

There is also regional sections on this forum. Check out the threads from your state. Get involved with a local Mazda car club.

If you want to see some pictures of other Protege's check out cardomain.com

hell check out my car :D http://www.cardomain.com/ride/352137

Once again welcome to your new addiction

dont forget the car can hold like 20+ bags from the super market :)
Ya, and then u put the seats down ;). Seriously, once a month or so I pack up my car and autocross it...4 tires, a fold out chair, a big ass umbrella, race jack, tire iron, 2 toolboxes (the races are 2 hours away...so incase anything breaks...), a helmet, a bookbag w/ all the s*** I USUALLY keep in my car but have to remove for racing, and probably some other s*** that I can't remember lol

my car is perfect for Sams Club. Big bags of dog food for our herd, flats of water TP, paper towels, soda, then the market, all in the back and back seat. It is so sweet! I do recommend the rear package tray, it has kept the carpet in perfect shape, and holds stuff in place, too.
