A simple car audio test!

2ohm subs run in series=4 ohms, parallel the two together = 2ohms... be back later on the rest of this, people in my basement partying.

isnt the load in the pic a 4 ohm load? if each of those subs have dual 4 ohm voice coils, and you ran each sub in series, it would make each sub an 8 ohm speaker. if you then run those two 8 ohm speakers in parallel, it brings the resistance back down to 4 ohms.

correct me if im wrong.

bleh... suck on some of this...

if the rms voltage of a given headunit is rated at 5vrms and the preout voltage experiences clipping at 75% of the unit's max volume (company sucks), where should the gains on the amps be set to match the headunit?
Not enough info.
Is the Preout voltage rated before, at, or well into clipping.
Also are we talking realistc voltage or tested voltage?

If we assume that the voltage at just before cliping will indead also be at 75% of the rated max (not likely) then you can just take 75% of 5 volts.
However the reality is that the rated voltage is likely totaly BS so the amps gain would be best set by ear :D

you also forgot to ask if it was for a full range amp or a sub amp. i know i can't hear 9 dB's worth of clipping at 100 hz, so why not let my amp clip that much? it's free power;) and the further below 100 hz you go, the less you can hear it. i know my 18 wasn't playing crap over 80 hz.

and yes, setting it by ear is still my prefered method;)

^^ Definitely set by ear.
Heres another easy one
Since we are on this topic, what is the preferred method for setting the gains on the sub amp, dealing with a deck that does have sub pre-outs?

sorry, i was talking in theory. i know that in the real world, theory don't work... my headunit says 4.5v, but i don't think i'm making that right now. i'm assuming that the voltage clip is at 90% of max volume, so i was in there tuning my gain to my ear. i initially started AT the 4.5v mark and went from there. it was a little higher than the 4.5v. i ended up around 3.5-4v.

my ghetto setup

2 DVC 10" (4ohm + 4ohm) + 4ohm mono amp

1st Sub: 4ohm + 4ohm = 8ohm
2nd Sub: 4ohm + 4ohm = 8ohm
8ohm // 8ohm = 4ohm

4ohm load conneted to bridge amp
