A/C & PS are gone!

this might not apply here, but I remember reading in SCC a long time ago that after removing the PS you should have the fluid drained? this will aide in turning considerably. this was a honda SI that they removed the PS from so I dont know if the same thing applies to the mazda, or if you already drained said fluid.

anyway, thats my 2 cents.

I was thinking that, but someone said I should loop the PS lines to improve turning. Only problem is that there doesn't seem to be any way to loop them & I wouldn't know where to go to get it drained.

So you saved 30 lbs? And you were making fun of me for thinking of a cf hood for it's weight savings (~30 lbs)? At least I'd still be able to turn in comfort :P

I improved the all-around feel of the engine, eliminated 1 of the 2 belts (& associated parasitic drag), AND saved 35lbs. I never made fun of anyone for a hood & I totally believe in weight savings.

I might have said something about a trunk though, but if you were serious about this, you wouldn't still have your stupid lip & wing on. :p

my beater has no power steering, in fact i have had 2 other cars without power steering and im 5'3" barely 100 lbs... if i can drive it, anyone ca. its just a matter of gettin used to.
black majik.. do what you want and what will work for you.
good job following your own path!!!
Thanks Christy...I always do. :D

very good job i was planning on doing this. i think the car feels much better without the PS, especialy driving it on the freeway.

Power steering is not necessary. My truck is over 5000 lbs, the steering wheel is an undersized aftermarket, and the tires are 275/50/16's, and it can still be parallel parked. If you are completely stopped, it is hard to turn the wheel, but if you are moving at all, even 1-2 mph, it is fine. And it feels really good at higher speeds.

Nice work, man. I won't be joining you down this particular road, but I can understand why you did it.

Damn, I guess I'm a pussy. I'm not going without a/c or p/s for 35 lbs. and MAYBE a tenth of a second in the 1/4.

I can understand completely and I might go this route also, I work outside all day so driving in the car without AC is no big deal, I thought it would wiegh more then that. Looks Good.

Thats basically what I did to the rx-7. Of course I only payed 400 for the rx-7.....

I didn't read the whole post either so I will add my .02 anyways, cause thats the way I am.

First off, your engine bay looks soo much cleaner with those things out of the way! I love the look.

Second off, you will damage your rack by running without the power assist.

did most early 80s cars have PS ? ive owned an 81 golf and i dont remeber if it had one, all i can remember was it wasnt that hard to drive. parallel parking needed a lil more muscle tho. and how does it damage rack ? is there a solution for this ?

I love weight savings.

It DOES feel much better driving at speed without PS.

The only time I am bothered by it is when I'm sitting still in a parking lot.

I want my MSP to be a "race car" (& I plan on accomplishing it before Marc :p ).

The engine bay looks SO much better, but it won't be complete until I get these last 2 damn hoses out.

Not all cars have PS (especially the older ones) & I don't think that running without it will affect the steering rack in any way.

.
it really does, u can fit a 12 in sub in there.

removing the PS fluid will damedge it by not being able to luricate it.would you run your engine with out oil?no you wouldn't(I hope).

and secondly the older cars without PS could steer easier, because the caster angles were ajusted to aid in manual steering,if our caster is adjustable you can go get an alignment, and ask how they can make it easy for you.any alignment shop will no what your refering.

Our caster is adjusable to two positions. It can be changed by turning the front top strut mount. I haven't played with it enough to see how much the adjustment changes things.

nethier have I,thats why I didn't give any "HOW-TO'S"

you wear the rack out much faster because it wasn't designed to work without assistance, you are putting a much greater strain on a part that wasn't designed for it...

i had the A/C removed on my Probe GT, i never had any problems with it, and in hindsight removing the PS would have been a good idea because the damn s*** wouldn't stop leaking on me haha, but the few times that it cut out completely was more than enough to convince me that i wanted to keep it :P...
