212 MPH Landspeed record in Saturn Ion Redline!?

says in the quote it was the 2.0 liter...turbo'd (not supercharged like the red line that they're putting out) and "altered fuel"...

The car is supercharged, and I guess anything is possible :)

And corvettes do not blow moron :)

The z06 is probably on the nicest tuned American Sports in history. 405 hp 400 lbs of torque, and it handles just as good as an EVO 7(YES IT DOES according it Car and Driver :) )!!

I hate people who only like one type of car (Import,Domestic,Euros) dude love each car by itself, just do love the whole class.

But I personally hate all hondas, I would never buy one :) Dont ask why I just do. Just like I hate BMW 3 series.

If I hit the lotto I would just buy the 900whp Z06 twin turbo and the caslonic skyline. Wooooo

Eric - Threadjack man

GETTING BACK TO THREAD TOPIC......They said that the Ion was based on the production model, but the production model has a supercharged 2.2L not a turbo 2.0L. Also, the altered fuel means alcohol. So I'm guessing this was based NOTHING like the production vehicle. This is yet another bad marketing plow to get the name of their new car out there. I wish mazda would make a rocket on wheels that would run mach 1.5 and call it "based on the Protege" "We call it Mazdaspeed".

Since you've said just love each car by itself, I have to confess that I don't think the Saturn looks all that bad...

And it looks like its got suicide doors:

Ignore the badgeand the potential quality/reliability and just look at the car:

Tell me whats so wrong with it from an esthetic standpoint..

I'm not saying I would buy one, but from pure esthetics, it could be worse. The rear spoiler is a bit big though.

ha, yea the salt-flat cars may have a cf/fiberglass/lexan body shaped like their production counterparts, but the powertrains are COMPLETELY altered.

I'm kind of curious why they didn't use the 2.2L Ecotec drag crate motor GM sells for the Cavalier/Sunfire. That thing puts out around 1000HP, but finding a gearbox to take it might be a pain in the ass.

fugly-ass airbrushed piece of s***.........

prolly has crank rear windows....

To all those who flamed me for saying corvettes blow. I made no mention of their performance capabilities. I was RATHER referring to the fact that they are ugly and the body style is extremely boring considering the fact that it hasn't really changed that much in about ~30 years. So, MYPfizzle, i'm not delusional and think my P5 will beat a corvette, so thanks for putting words in my mouth. And EricBlackMSP, i appreciate your insult to my intelligence, i also think its awesome to insult other people over the internet.
I guess in the future I will qualify my statements to prevent this from happening again. Sorry for the inconvience.

Hey, I own a redline...212 MPH, not a chance!

has to be BS. Look at the chasis they build those cars on and look at the Corvette. I'ts considered AMAZING for a corvette to run 212mph. How unbelievable is it for a friggin POS saturn to do it?? Those stupid "dent-resistant" panels would blow off the car.

FWIW, I've never seen a saturn go over 120mph. Even the sporty 2 door model 5-spd with the 2.2L motor.

I'm callin BS on this unless it's some specialty race car made for the salt flats or whatnot

I agree about it not being possible, I own a 2004 redline, and maxes out at a little over 140, specs say it is governed at somewhere between 144 and 146 MPH, don't know for sure, speedo only goes to 140 and stops at what looks like about 143 MPH. So while you may not have seen it, now you know. :)

Have fun everyone! :)

And your opinion is...

Hey, I take offense to that, I own an 04 Ion Redline...ok, I don't really, everybody has an opinion. I personally think that the wings they're sticking on most of these cars are ridiculous. They not only offer ZERO downforce at high speed, but they block your vision, and quite frequently cause excessive drag. Did the same psychology twats start the wing revolution that started that stupid teenage kids sucking on pacifiers? Inquiring minds want to know...well, not really. Have a good one. :)

Anyone else hear this..

I heard on news this AM that a Saturn Ion redline set the small sedan land speed record @ 212 mph!!

:wtf: ... I'm not sure if I'll be happy gettin' passed by a saturn! LOL!!

Y'all should get used to it.... :D

the dude who lives next to me supposedly has one of the fastest privately owned streetable saturns in the states. Fully built forged engine and i think a t3/t4 60 trim, 100o cc injectors, pretty badass, just saw him put the new bigger turbo on it couple days ago, hasnt tuned it yet but with his old one he was trapping near 120 in the 1/4 or something.

Hey DS, no problem, thanks for such a quick reply to my post. This forum rocks! :)

I'm gonna see if I can't find anything about this on the web when I get home...there has to be something, as it is a new record.

I totally agree w/ you there, Eric....the MSP would be even better w/ RWD or AWD & a better ECU. Plus you won't see me in a 200 HP Saturn...for the same reason I'm not in a 250 HP Neon right now...

As for the I4 breaking 180, don't forget about the older version Lotus Esprit's...they had a twin turbo I4 that kicked ass. I don't know if it broke 180, but if not I'm positive that it was pretty damn close, as it is considered an exotic supercar.

Hey, my Ion Redline is an exotic supercar, as long as by exotic, you mean black and clean, and by supercar you mean mine...ok, how about we call it a little quad coupe that I love 'cause it puts a smile on my face every time I see it or drive it? That'll do for me. :)

It would be very interesting to see exactly what changed in the engine, as they kept the displacement the EXACT same 1998cc's as the super charged stock verion they're putting into the redline (and soon Cobalt SS's). Anybody have any info on that? Yeah, I know "go to the Saturn forums and ask"...but I LIKE IT here! :)
