I was reading through the quick start manual and it shows there should be a 'AFS' button to turn on or off the adaptive lighting. My sticker shows I have adaptive lighting as part of the tech package, but the car doesn't have this button below the tire reset button - there is a blank there.

Anyone know more about this?

I was having trouble with adaptive lighting myself but had yet to consult the manual. I'll check out my buttons tonight and report back.

You have the i-ActiveSense package on your GT too?

The i-ACTIVSENSE package requires the Grand Touring Technology Package ($1,505 MSRP), which includes navigation, Smart City Brake Support (SBS), LED headlights with auto leveling, Pivoting Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), LED foglights, LED Signature Daytime Running Lights, LED Combination Taillights and auto dimming mirror with Homelink.

EDIT: Actually I meant to say are you sure you have the tech package?

Yeah, I have both packages. I have the navigation, lane departure warning, etc.

I noticed while thumbing around with the navigation yesterday there was a setting to turn the adaptive front-lighting system on/off - I thought maybe that button was for those without the Nav unit, but then remembered you can't get one without the other.

I was just going to edit my post and say maybe it's a 2016 thing and the quick brochure wasn't updated correctly?

I couldn't find the button referenced in the actual 2016 manual - it says to refer to the personalization settings in chapter 9 which states to either use the Nav unit or see dealer.

Yeah I don't have the button either. So you turn it on/off in the nav setting right? It's supposed to allow you to drive with high beams but automatically dim when it senses oncoming traffic correct? Is it working for you?

Is the setting for AFS (Adaptive Frontlight System) linked to High-beam Control in the 2016's?

That button I thought was for the Adaptive front-lighting system, not the auto high-beam control?

In regards to the auto HBC, I have tried it - it works well on back country roads but not so much on roads with traffic lights and street lights. I also noticed on back roads if someone is coming at you on a straight-away it works well, but if they are coming around a bend it's a second or so delayed.

Both Auto HBC and AFLS can be toggled on or off using the navigation.

I just got my car sith i activ sense package too and i notice there's no AFS. And they lights don't turn like they used to on the previous models.

Anybody know if the AFS still works with the adaptice led headlights?

I just got a 2016 GT w/tech package and I have the same problem. There is no AFS button but controlling it through the screen does toggle it on/off. There is also no "AFS Off" light on the dash as shown in the manuals. Not sure if I want to make a big stink about this, but I clearly have something other than what's in their printed materials.

EDIT: It appears I'm not the only one to bring this up and Mazda just did a poor job of updating their doc/manuals. I doubt I would ever turn off the AFS anyways. Their big 600+ page manual doesn't make mention of the AFS button but the "quick start guide" does. It also shows the "AFS Off" light on the dash, so the quick start guide apparently hasn't been updated.

This is interesting... I thought I didn't have AFS because I didn't see the button either however looking back at the Mazda.ca website, all GT models should have it standard.

What exactly does AFS do? It is supposed to turn your headlights slightly to the direction you're going? Do you have to be moving for it to take effect?
AFS can make you see better to the side when cornering. It also do auto leveling according to the load. Yeah, the car has to be moving for it to take effect.

I've noticed mine turning, but not auto-leveling. Guess I haven't loaded up the car enough yet?

I'm in the market for a CX5 and am debating whether or not to get the LED headlights. Do you know how the AFS works? The must be some kind of motor that moves the headlight unit when the steering wheel turns. Also for the high beams, can the auto high beam control be totally defeated and allow me to control the high beams? Thank you.

You can use the high beams manually by pulling on the control stalk (LHS of wheel), or put them in auto control by pushing the stalk forward. So you have full control on the high beams and you can go from auto to manual in an instant.

The LED lights turn with wheel, and they level based on the suspension travel.

Yeah, AFS uses four motors turning the headlight projectors left and right according to your steering wheel angle and up and down according to the load level in the rear suspension. You can manually control the high-beams even if you have HBC, High-Beam Control. But be aware that Tech Package has LED lightings and AFS, but HBC is included in a separate i-ActivSense Package.

Do spend extra to get Tech Package and it well worth the money! LED DRLs alone would look much more modern and nicer than those out-of-date dim and yellow high-beam DRLs!
