2016 CX5 better "driving machine" over 2017

Something very important that people seem to not realize. Mazda did not design the 2017 CX-5 to convince owners of the 2016 model to purchase. They designed it and made the changes they did to attract more NEW buyers than before. It worked... the 2017 changes are what attracted me to this vehicle in the first place.

Agreed. Got my attention and hoping to get mine later this year

Come on, joe. Yes, any time a new version of a model gets released, car companies hope to attract new buyers. With the new version though, 1st gen owners (not JUST 2016) SHOULD want to upgrade to the newest version! I know a small amount of users here already have but the general consensus seems to be that it's not worth it and not desirable to upgrade. This is where Mazda struggles with brand loyalty.

Same...TBH it was the new features and interior.

Indeed. Among the features I liked was HUD (very impressive) when I took one for a test drive yesterday plus the overall quietness inside

Yep.

Let me just trade in my significantly faster vehicle with higher mpg ratings and better safety ratings, which also isnt worth s*** on trade, and carry several thousand dollars of negative equity into one that's a little quieter inside and has a cool HUD! That sounds like the plan for me!

Don't confuse a handful of loud people repeating their opinion into oblivion being the "general consensus".

Fine fine, the consensus of the NHTSA, EPA, and anyone who values acceleration and handling (Bueller? Bueller? Am I still on the Mazda forum, or is this the RAV4 place?)

There really is no reason to upgrade though....

Sound deadening? It's really not that loud on the highway...

Softer ride? 1st gen was just fine and one of the main reasons why I bought it was for the handling.

Design? I prefer the 1st gen, especially with the 16.5 grille. The '17 interior is definitely more trendy, and I would've favored it if they at least made the cockpit more like what the CX-3 or mazda3 have. Cockpit and gauges stayed boring.

Btw, I'm not hating on the new CX-5. It's great that you new buyers are happy with your purchases right now. I just don't like the direction Mazda went with it and I wouldn't consider trading for it now or in a few years. If Mazda wants to make it into appliance to gain more sales volume, I would rather just get the appliance that is more established and has been in the game building appliances much longer (e.g., CR-V).

No, there is no reason to upgrade, since you are obviously happy with your current CX-5. But I'd hardly call it an "appliance". I alternate between the CX-5 and A4 and really enjoy it. I would have never gone for it if I felt like it drove like an appliance.

Ha, im actually not very happy with my Cx-5, but it's fine for what it is (family mobile). Can't trade it in right now due to the huge depreciation hit anyway so I'm just living with it.

Either way, no one should be offended about what's posted here as we are all adults just making conversation; there are more important things going on in the world right now. Hope no one here is from the U.K.

And let's all stop hating on mango.

Agreed, all fun. And I found a great way to stop hating on Mango. He is on my Ignore list.

If you want a manufacturer that makes appliances then Toyota is one!

Mazda sure is trying hard to be Toyota.

(How can you call a <200hp CUV anything BUT an appliance?)

HP is not the main or only reason to classify a car as an appliance:

  • Boring exterior looks
  • Boring interior looks
  • Boring to drive

Driven lots of Toyota's here and they don't interest me and I classify then as appliances or as we say here White goods (yawn)

CX5 qualifies for all 3 of the above. Unless you are a CX5 or CUV owner, they look the same as any other tiny SUV on the road. I didn't even notice them until I bought one, now I see one at every stoplight. Definitely boring to drive. Of course, that's subjective. Compared to a car, it's boring AF. Compared to another CUV, until the 2017 model, it was entertaining. Now it's about like a Toyota RAV 4 or something it would seem.

And that's what it is... subjective.

I drove the 2017 yesterday pretty hard and I found it entertaining. Sure not like a car but still I was pleased.

Over here the CX-5 be it the previous model or this one is not seen as a white good. In fact no reviews I have read mention this. Obviously different countries see vehicles differently.

I am not young or old but for my age, this new CX-5 seems to fit my bill.

I could drive a RAV 4 pretty hard and find it entertaining, too.

This is what I am getting at...the CX5 is not some magical cut-off point. We have a guy on here with an ///M4, and he finds the CX5 to be ok. But oh! OMG! If he went just a WEEE bit below the CX5, it would be boring.

Right.

I find the notion absurd. If you can have fun in a CX5, you can have fun in anything.

I have never met anyone until this forum who viewed a small compact SUV with an 8-ish second 0-60 with no offroad capability to speak of as anything but a coffee-maker.

Rav4 entertaining? For me, I don't think so. Driven it hard and normal and very uninspiring.

I am not saying the CX-5 is the best SUV in history. Far from it. There are better ones near it's class such as low end Euros. But these don't interest me.

For the price and features it has, what I will be using the CX-5 for which is normal driving in suburban areas and the few times a month on motorways/freeways/highways, I know I will be happy with it. To me it is fine. But this comment is only for me.

Trying to persuade others that it is good or bad is a waste of time. Learnt that lesson a long time ago. In the end, each person is different and they have their own requirements, impressions and expectations.

Each to their own
