2014 Mazda CX-5?

Hey everyone,
I currently drive a 08 cx7 awd and am now looking towards the cx5 2.5. Not sure if I will get awd or fwd. one of the main reasons I would like to switch is the fuel. I test drove one recently and was happy with the performance. My concern is after reading many of the topics posted, I am worried about the noise/chatter it has. To those who owns a 2.5 what are your opinions about it? Any feedback would be great. Thanks

I have a 2014 AWD Touring. The interior engine noise was a little louder than I expected, I noticed it right away on the one we test drove. The interior road/wind noise level is very good. I think the car is sealed up tight but is maybe lacking some of the engine bay insulation found on more expensive cars. Really though the noise level doesn't bother me at all and it's pretty comparable to other cars in this category (we have a 2013 Escape at work that sounds pretty similar). What topics and threads are you referring to exactly?

I traded my '08 CX 7 for a '14 CX 5 Touring (2.5, of course) and I find it to be much quieter than the CX 7 ever was, especially with regards to the engine. Unless I am revving it high to pass then I don't ever notice excessive engine noise that you describe.

The wind noise, however, is more noticiable on the CX 5 as compared to the 7, but it is not bothersome to me. I encourage you to do the trade. I thought perhaps I would miss my 7 and the turbocharged engine, but the 5 feels almost as quick and is of higher quality in terms of fit and finish and ride quality.

I have had mine for about 3 weeks now and this is what I noticed:
1) When the engine is cold (morning starts, evening starts after sitting in office all day, etc) the engine revs higher than normal when changing gears. I also notice engine noise beyond 2000 rpm. This is mostly for the first 5 minutes or so of driving. In these conditions, I notice the engine noise even when standing still at lights. However, I do not have any vibrations or car-shakes during this period.
2) When the engine has got sufficiently hotter, the noise reduces. In such situations, I barely notice the engine running and only when I step on the gas pedal. While idling during this period, I find that rpm is around 700 and there is barely any noise at all.

Also, you may find some wind noise while driving on the highway in windy conditions. It also depends on whether you get the roof-rails or not as I guess that matters too.

Overall, there is some wind/engine noise but I don't see it as something out of the ordinary as yet.

In most conditions engine noise is low and not an issue for me at all.
Most notable exception is the first ~10 sec after cold start.
If anything, I'd mention some wind noise at highway speed when there are some wind gusts. I think it is fairly standard for CUVs of this class.

I got AWD to satisfy Caltrans requirements for snowy roads, i.e. to avoid having to put chains when going on ski trips.

I actually like the engine sound. Only wind noise complaint I have is with the cross-bars and when the sunroof is open. Probably because I have the cross-bars spread apart versus together at the rear to maybe minimize it...

I've been driving mazda's for all my life. Had 626 protege and now cx5. My family drive mazda's too. They all seem to sound loud and rev a bit high on the initial start up. Especially in the cold. After a few minutes of driving it goes away. No there isn't anything wrong with them. My neighbor has a 2011 BMW x5 and his sounds even louder when he starts it. So it's all normal for these cars. As far as when it warms up its fine. I don't hear any loud noise when I drive my cx5. I think people are being to picky. My friend has a 2009 Audi q5 and it's no quieter than my cx5. Especially on the highway. I love my cx5 and out it up there with the x3 interns of quality built

Sorry but you won't find any hood or mirror shake on an X3. I am very happy with our CX5 so far after 9000 miles, and it compares well against Escapes, CRV's, or any SUV in its price range. Comparing it against BMW, Audi, or Lexus is not even fair.

I don't have any hood shakes or mirror shakes. My cx5 drives great. My wife actually had a 2010 x3 and honestly she even would rather drive the cx5 as it's more fun to drive. Go figure. And to me the x3 is crap quality for a very very expensive car. Waste of money that I spent

Well I don't agree.
I looked at and sat in the 2013 Q5,Q3, also test drove a X3, and XC60.

And still bought the CX-5.

My personal choice but I much prefer the mazda inside and out as I said the Audi didn't even inspire a need for a test drive.
I did drive a 2L diesel X3 and it drove very nice its a good drive.

But the BMW interior looks to me down market, I actually thought the dash top looked like recycled plastic bottles.
Both me and my wife were really disappointed with the quality, especially for the price.

Lol, I love my wife's CX5 but sky active equals tin foil hood. Don't push on it too hard when you close it or it will buckle! Shouldn't be on a $30,000 car.

Though any car can be a lemon, I can honestly say that I enjoy driving my CX5 GS (Canadian). The 2.5 liter is not a V6 with 278HP and still the gearbox and the engine are just a fine combination for a wonderful experience. True the hood can be vibrating slightly, my Hyundai has the same thing. It is visual. The driver side mirror vibrations... just a little bit. The car is built light, for this you get very good mileage (together with the SkyActive), the driving experience is just great. What is not so great is the radio/head unit. It annoys me to no end that Mazda is ignoring my many inquiries and tweets and that I paid an extra 700 bucks for the unit to get GPS when half of the functions are not working correctly. There is a whole other thread about this - easy to spot.

I would love to see that honestly. A 2.3L turbocharged engine vs a 2.5 n/a engine. Unless the cx7 was asleep or didn't realize there was a race going on, the cx7 should win hands down

I sometimes miss the turbocharged engine in my CX 7 but the fit and finish of the 5 more than makes up for the loss in power, IMO.

I felt cramped when i sat in a cx5 to be honest. I felt more comfortable & open in the cx7 compared to the 5.the cx5 feels like a mazda 3 & the cx7 feels like a Mazda 6 to me. Granted, i would like some of the newer creature comforts that the cx5 has, but it would take a lot to get me out of it. I can't wait for the SkyActiv Diesel to make it's US debut, but maybe i have an obsession with turbo's

Hate to remind you of this, but the hood was designed for a $21k car.
It's not like they make one hood for the Sport and the Touring, but a whole different hood for the top of the line Grand Touring with the electric fuzzy dice option.
