Kia has unveiled its latest push into markets once dominated by European brands - a 5-series rival named Cadenza.

That looks familiar...

Observant readers may notice more than a little Saab 9-5 at the front, while the side view hints at 3-series and Alfa 159-esque profiling as you follow the lines toward the rear of the car. The European theme even extends to the name: Cadenza is derived from an Italian musical term loosely meaning 'the elaborate flourish of a concerto'. Bravo.
The Cadenza is based on Kia's VG concept as shown at the Seoul auto show in April 2009. Perching on those big wheels with dark tinted windows, this Korean appears to mean business.
So what's new?

The exterior may make people sit up and listen, but it seems the real focus is on your driving experience. Hands a little chilly? The Cadenza has a heated steering wheel. Rump a bit warm? Fear not: ventilated seats feature too. Step towards the driver's door and you'll trigger a welcoming sequence: a pool of exterior light greets the driver and mood-lighting inside the cabin glows around the floating dashboard.
Although the all-new luxury saloon won't be making an official appearance on UK roads, the Cadenza will be officially released at Middle Eastern motor shows towards the end of 2009.
Will the Kia Cadenza blow my socks off?

No official word yet on engines or prices, although the VG concept sported 3.5 litres of V6, throwing 277 horses through the front wheels.
Kia is steadily becoming an oddball brand with a dash of imagination. Collaboration with Lotus on cars for UK release could mean it is set for a swift hike up the manufacturers hierarchy. Only time will tell.

Not digging the two tone seats or the gloss black center console.

Wait a minute, oh, I know....

The Cadenza is another reflection of Kia's turn towards design under the guidance of Peter Schreyer. The nose is aggressively styled with bold headlamp designs.

And, in August 2006:

Former Audi Chief to lead Kia Design Team

Peter Schreyer, former chief designer for Audi and VW is to become the Korean firm's design chief

Kia Motors Corporation announced today that it has appointed leading automotive industry designer Peter Schreyer, who designed world renown "cult" cars like the New Beetle and the Audi TT, to the newly created position of Chief Design Officer. Mr. Schreyers appointment will complement Kias significantly increasing emphasis on automobile design and support the ongoing regeneration of its model range

2011 Kia Cadenza bows in Korea, replacing Amanti in the U.S.

Kia has taken the wraps off the 2010 Cadenza in its home market before its official debut at next month's Riyadh Motor Show in Saudi Arabia, and if you're wondering what the South Korean automaker had planned for the next generation Amanti, this is it.

Based on an all-new front-drive platform (Type-N) spanning 195.5 inches, the Cadenza is slightly shorter than the Amanti it's due to replace, but its wheelbase has grown to 112 inches and Kia managed to reduce the weight by over 280 pounds while keeping torsional rigidity and overall strength up. MacPherson struts are employed up front with a multi-link suspension in the rear, while 11.8-inch discs (front) and 11.2-inch rotors (rear) are hidden behind standard 16-inch or optional 17-inch wheels.

Three engines, each mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, will be available when the Cadenza launches outside of North America in January. Outputs will range from 162 (four-cylinder) to 286 hp (V6), with the latter like to come to the US. Kia hasn't released when the new Amanti will make it Stateside, but the smart money says sometime late in 2010.

The Amanti needed to be replaced badly...and that revised interior looks good :)
