2008 Oem Radio question

I just bought a 2008 Mazda5 sport. The dealership told me that the stock single disk CD player played MP3 disks. Well, it does not. It looks like things are modular and I found a deal on a BAP5-79-EGX. Will this fit? I want to keep the steering wheel functions and to keep everything stock. I know this is not the standard part number but it seems like the same unit. Any help is appreciated!

Just double check at MazdaUSA(dot)com (see thumbnail, the site shows the part numbers). The "console" itself the same for 06s, 07s and 08s I believe but the faceplate changes from aluminum finish to black gloss...

The dealer may have confused the Aux input (which you can use to connect an MP3 player of course) with the MP3 CD playing capability...

is the BAP5-79-EGX the unit on the Grand Touring Trim ?

I test drove a GT yesterday and it had a black glossy colored faceplate.

So that means the GT 6 disc changer is MP3 disc compatible ?

Not unless they changed things since my '06 (very possible). There used to be a 6-disc changer, or another 6-disc that would play MP3s. Like coolmazda5 said, check MazdaUSA's website.

I have a 08' sport no options and it plays MP3's. Funny that yours does'nt and its only a single disc? From my understanding the 08's came automatically with the upgraded system the only stereo option would be navagation or sat. Also it a 6 disc changer in dash. But if it makes you feel any better mine quit working today so looks like a visit to the stealership.

I tried an MP3 disc in my Touring '08 and it did a whole lot of nothing! :(

How quickly did your car recognize it?

I have an 08 Sport with the 6CD changer (Popular Package), but it does not play MP3s, it has an aux input only. Unless the top left corner label of your stereo reads 6CD and MP3 or something like that (see pic attached with an example, thumbnail below) then chances are it won't play MP3s :(

I could swear it was a mp3 and it did start working again this morning I'll go out right now and try a mp3. Also if you have the Popular Package should'nt you have a sunroof too?

Moonroof, I wish!! :D

With that, leather steering wheel, leather knob and the fogs would make it Touring allright

No, the package is as follows:

2006:
1PE, Popular Equipment Package - $490
Body color wing roof spoiler; Side body skirts; Audio system with Disc Autochanger and six-disc remote changer; Excludes: [CDC] MP3 CD Changer

Source:

2008, from MazdaUSA.com. No changes, really:
Popular Equipment Package (1PE)
* In-dash 6-disc CD changer
* Rear liftgate spoiler
* Side sill extensions

The standard equipment is different in 08. I know auto AC is standard. I was debating getting an 08 for quite a while.

what sold me on an 08' was the 5speed auto. Though I do wish second gear was shorter. That and rear a/c vents (which is a big plus to me for the kiddo's I live in texas its hot!) is what sold us we had a choice between and 07's and one 08' and I'm glad at what we chose. Do they even sell a one without the popular package? I have yet to see one. And forget about finding a standard one around here. If you have one then consider yourself lucky. Has for playing mp3's I have yet to check. Is the upgraded navagations radio sound any better than the 6 disc?

Ok guys,
After starting this thread I have done my research. The 2008 single disk player does not play MP3s. The optional 6 disk changer included in the popular options package for 2008 also does not play MP3s. The optional 2008 6 disk changer that is available as an accessory through the dealership also does not play MP3s! The 2006-2007 6 disk changer does play MP3s as long as it is not the popular options version. The 2006-2007 will fit a 2008 with no modifications to the wiring contrary to what 3 different dealerships told me. I bought one just to try although it was the popular options version without MP3 compatibility. The only thing that is different between a 06-07 and the 08 is an aux input. I am keeping the 07 6 disk changer radio in my car and installing this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MP3-...62QQcategoryZ43947QQihZ016QQitemZ260252747712

This adds the aux input for my ipod,etc and also allows me to use a USB memory stick or SD card to put all my favorite songs on. The factory radio thinks that each folder on the usb stick labeled CD01,CD02, etc is another cd in a second CD changer. This is even better than the OEM $450 option in my opinion. Just mount the little box in the glove box and bingo- MP3s galore.(mj)(dance)(breakn)(nana)(cabpatch)(guitar)(band)(band2)

In case anyone is still reading this thread...

Hey all,

Just bought a 2009 mazda5 last month, and of course was craving an MP3 option on the stock deck.

Unfortunatly, the only way to get the capability to play MP3s on the headunit, is by getting the navigation option.

BUT, by doing a bit of research, I was able to source a modular 6 disc MP3 changer for my car. It was meant for the 06-07 models, but as long as you have the stock deck or even the stock 6 disc MP3 changer, you can swap them with the MP3 model.

Here's the model that I used:

CC99-79-EGX

Google ebay for this...there's guys selling these for just over $200US. Bought mine, and put it in this weekend. Works like a champ, and you can use the stock faceplate without an issue.

Hope this helps anyone googling this thread! (as I was a few weeks ago!)
