2002 Mazda Protege Lx 2.0 from hell

2002 Mazda protege lx 2.0
First let me give a little background into this car and what I have gone through with it... I bought the car about a year ago with high hopes that it would rid me of my falling apart 1996 Toyota Camry. The car had 89k miles, now 96k

The day I bought my car, I drove it about 15 miles of city driving back to my
Home and noticed that the engine was smoking... So I open up the hood and see oil, everywhere all over the belt an side of the engine. I don't know why I didn't think to look under the hood in the first place, but I didn't. Needless to say, I drove right back to the dealership and they explained to me that the head gasket was broken. I said okay, so fix it. They fixed it but left the oil all over the side of the engine. The car squeaks, I realize it is probably from the oil. Both belts replaced and tried to clean the oil off as much as possible. Did not work.... So I dealt with it for a few months thinking the oil would eventually wear off. The squeaking got worse...

Next, I go Pepboys and they tell me I need a new timing belt, and basically everything along with that. Quote me some ridiculous price. I go to good year and its 600 bucks cheaper. I replace the timing belt, everything along with that.

Misfires start to happen. More when the engine is warmed up and idling in gear, but oddly enough the misfiring gets progressively worse and worse as the months continue. I do not think its EGR valve because that would be more of a consistent wobbling up and down when idling, rather than random engine jumps that progressively get worse. Check engine light finally turns on, good year says cylinder 3 misfire. Spark plug is shot. They replace set with new plug wires... 3 months pass, engine continues to randomly misfire or skip or whatever it is. Replace spark plugs again. It stops, and begins its ritual of progressively getting worse.

Today. Replace spark plugs and new plug wires as of today, along with new coils. I thought one might be going bad which would be indicative of a random misfire.... Now replaced, engine is no longer misfiring as frequently, but it is still present.

Any ideas? Also, I'm not sure if this is the right forum section. Sorry if its not.

replacing the coil packs should have been done long before when you did it....you could have had a lot of unused gas or deposites working it's way to the which could cause pressure in the system if it got welded shut or somewhat cutoff causing an uneasy flow...check your cat, and also check your MAF sensor. etc

Thanks IshonP5.... The thing is at one point I had the plugs replaced at Good Year. They tested the coils and said they were fine....

Nope. Not once. The car starts like a charm, and other than when its idling...It runs perfectly. It is a mystery to me and to everyone I have had look at the car. When I replaced the timing belt assembly I thought that would have been the ultimate answer ( it was at that point to where it needed to be changed anyways). But it just showed up again and gets worse and worse.

I took the car to Good Year this morning. As expected, without a code to read they can't really do much diagnosing. Its like a needle in a haystack situation right now. I was watching the RPM for about 10 minutes and noticed that it does fluctuate up and down just slightly, most times right before the engine jump. That makes me think fuel pump or injectors, but I am clueless.

I guess I will deal with it or just buy a new car.

I have the same exact problem. NO idea what it could be. I even did a full gasket job on the head to say if it was gasket issues. Nothing fixed it. 1 and 4 were misfiring for me. I replaced both coil packs, all spark plugs, all new wires, etc. and it fixed it temporarily. But I have no idea what i could be, and I'd like to find out...
