2.0 conversion to 1.8 Coil Packs

I really want to do this conversion and I found the ignition coil on napaonline.com but I had a question:

Judging by this pic (from napa online) it looks like the mounting bracket is included, is this correct?
1.8L%20Ignition%20Coil.jpg

So, in total I would need
1 ignition coil (pictured above)
1 set of spark plug wires for 2000 1.8L Protege
(Optional) 626 valve cover

Is this all I would need to do the conversion on my P5?

yes, what you see in the picture is all included.

also, you really should consider getting a 626 valve cover. i could not get the plug wires to seat correctly onto the spark plugs with the protege cover. it ran, but not ideal.

Thanks. So if I buy the pictured coil from NAPA, will I need the Mazda coil bracket part number FP47-18-105?? I want the cleanest install possible so if the bracket will help me avoid zip-tying everything together then let me know so I can spend the extra $7 for the right bracket.

I'm either going to get a 626 valve cover from the local junkyard or from a member here on the boards. I'm not really in a rush because I also plan on doing a pretty extensive paint job on the new valve cover so I can't just slap everything together once all the parts are here.

yeah, that bracket make it look cleaner. the ground strap and condensor mount to that bracket. it also has two lugs on the end to bolt the coil to it, i assume for a stronger mount. (two bolts to the head, and two bolts to that bracket) its $8 from OnlineMazdaParts.com

thanks once again!

I've got to look into this. Maybe if I would cover it with an MSP engine cover.....Aren't there like brackets that can attach it to a regular Protege valve cover?

Also, just so I am clear on this, are those wires the standard NGK wires that come on the 1.8L Pro or are they upgraded NGK wires?

Just got done ordering the goods:

Ignition coil - $45.89 after shipping and tax (NAPAonline.com - Part Number ECH IC289)
NGK Plug Wires - $38.41 after shipping and tax (ngk.com - Part Number ZX52)

Will be sending payment for a used valve cover later tonight (from an FS-DE without coil-over-cylinder crap on it).

Ordered the mounting bracket from my dealer earlier today - $6.79 (employee discount).

Then it's either a polishing job or a nice coat of color for the valve cover (hmmm, what color though??) and then the 1.8L coil conversion, woohoo!

I ordered a new valve cover gasket kit just to be prepared. My valve cover hasn't been removed ever in its life (~54,000 miles) so I thought I'd get one.

With my employee discount at the dealer it was around $22 for the gasket. Not sure what list would be or what you could get it for from Montgomery Mazda.

Prices sound about right.

Make sure napaonline is on the ball with your order. Check their shipping info w/ups tracking...napa indicated my order was being processed locally, but when you check ups, it's still in another state! Also, my order was a special order, didn't keep the coilpacks in stock...Longer delay.

ngk.com/sparkplugs.com has different coupon codes, dodgetalk gives you 10% discount...saved on tax!

And as for the bracket...see my pic:

I didn't get it. I used the 2 mounting holes on the coilpack, and the right side mounting points was used for the original bracket that housed the ground and other sensor thingy. You can see it on my picture.

Alright, finally received all my parts, I just need to repaint the new valve cover before I'm ready to rip everything apart.

I have one last question for those who have done this: what is the best way to pull the ignition coil wiring out of the main harness without destroying everything in the process? I want it to look as clean as possible so any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I just found the seam & used an exacto knife VERY carefullyopening up the harness section by section until coilwires were free all the way back to the back driver's corner of the motor. I did this with the fuel injector wiring harness completely unplugged from everything & after removing coil wires far enough back, took roll of electrical tape & rewrapped every bit I had opened up in one piece ( about half a roll) all the way back then continued wrapping the coil wires themselves all the way to the shrink wrap already on the end of the coil wires. Very nervewracking & tedious. Just take your time & it'll be OK.

ditto....just take your time, and be sure to wrap everything back up when you get to where you want to go.

I did mine with MSP valve cover & trim the boots since covered.Oh yeah, trimmed the cover itself for wire access......http://www.msprotege.com/members/i12drivemyMP5/coils_1.jpg
