1000 mile check up

:
2016.5 Mazda CX 5 Grand Touring W/ Tech PKG
So my dealer told me when I hit about the 800-1,000 mile point bring the CX -5 in for a once over (free) so they can check the fluids and tighten down some nuts & blots.

Anyone had this done? If so, is there anything I should be aware of..? Or is this just a good dealer doing a good thing?

Unnecessary - it did not leave the factory with loose bolts. It's to find something to sell to you no doubt. Much like that "let's schedule your first service" on the very day you buy it.

Not needed at 1k. They already did the delivery check when you got the car. Spend some time with the vehicle and note questions/issues and take them up at 5k, when you can rotate tires and change oil. Set the oil monitor for flexible if you haven't already (in case you want to drive beyond 5k).

Checking the oil level in these cars is difficult (check 3+ times, ignoring the first reading). It comes around 2/3 to 1/2 full when delivered and may use some during the break-in period.

What's hard about it? Check 10 to 15 minutes after shut down when the engine is hot on a level surface. A hot oil level will be a little higher than a cold one.

Actually I agree with Seabright including enabling the oil life monitor and oil level is low from factory for every Mazda's! Oil level is harder to read too comparing to other vehicles, but that has to be because the use of Mazda moly oil from factory. With this watery Mazda moly oil, you can hardly see the oil line formed on the dipstick even if the oil is cold!

Been there, try looking at the dipstick in front of a headlight.

My problem is it seems to smear oil on one side of the dipstick. If I check and wipe a few times, the smearing diminishes and I get a better reading. I use the side opposite the smear to read the level. I've been checking oil level on my cars for nearly 50 years and this dipstick is by far the most difficult to get a good reading.

One reason I think I'll take them up on the free check up @ 1000 miles is that this past Sunday afternoon I was putting on my new license plates and though I'd look under the hood. I saw the radiator reservoir was empty and the oil was half way between the two dots. I parked it friday evening after work and this was Sunday afternoon on a level area so all fluids were settled. I was going to go out and just get an extra QT. of 0W-20 oil and then read about the Mazda oil with Moly. So thought I would just let the dealer do this top off if needed.

Yes oil image is blurry, but you can see it..

As far as the nuts & bolts they said it was the wheels lugnuts etc. and to see if I heard any rattles for them to look at or tighten down.

Try checking the radiator fluid reservoir with the engine hot? Also, the oil level is what comes with the factory fill. Around half.

Yep, that's definitely a reason to go back. Either someone didn't do their job on the precheck or you have a coolant leak...

Guess which oil my dealer would use when I change oil or top off oil there?

I actually bought a bottle of Mazda moly oil at dealer's parts department to top my oil level off when our CX-5 is new as the factory fill is the Mazda moly and I don't like the idea of mixing different oils. That's how I found out that "Preferred Choice" oil is what my Mazda dealer would use. I also checked several brand new CX-5's in the dealer's lot and all of them were at ~ ⅔ between "Low" and "Full" marks on the dipstick. BTW, the same on the coolant level, all of them were at about between "L" and "F" marks on the plastic coolant reservoir.

This actually makes me think Mazda is trying to save cost by keeping these fluid levels lower than the full mark as the Mazda moly oil and Mazda OEM coolant are pretty expensive!

Your coolant level in reservoir is not empty! The level is between "L" and "F" according to your picture. The "L" mark on the reservoir is below the big notch for the passing hose.

Yeah, you can ask your dealer to top both fluids off. But they either would say they're within specs, or do the top off with any fluids available on hand, most likely some bulk oil from a 55-gallon drum, and just tap water for your coolant!

You're right! I didn't look carefully enough at the photo of the coolant tank, but I would add distilled water instead of tap. Even better would be to get yourself a jug of Mazda coolant since it is already premixed, and I agree with Ed about the 1000 mile checkup, shows concern for customer satisfaction. What could they possibly find at 1000 miles to try to nail you on?

Not many people are willing to spend $28.16 for a gallon of https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned) just for topping off:

What could they possibly find at 1000 miles to try to nail you on? May be not, and even if OP's dealer find any loose bolts and nuts, Mazda would pay for it. But OP's intention is to just let the dealer do these top offs. Most likely they won't do it, or simply use "Preferred Choice" oil and tap water. Topping off these fluids with those won't be a good idea IMO.

Wow, Okay I did not see the "L" mark either... Thanks for the info. I'll request the Mazda Moly oil too I saw you can purchase it from Amazon too.

Unnecessary, but I like it. I try to change the oil in a new engine at 1k, thinking it might drain out some wear products.

Update:

I finally hit the 1,000 miles and took it in for the free checkup...

1.) put it up on the lift, checked for any leaks under and on the shield under the engine.
2.) checked all the fluids - topped off the window washer, said oil was good also the coolant.
3.) looked all through the engine bay, differential area, around each of the wheel bays.
4.) check air in the tires, check torque on wheel nuts, checked all lights. Vacuum inside.
5.) service manager sat down with us and asked if we had any question and answers them all.
6.) received a pass for a free car wash too......

They never tried to up sale us on anything. We did purchase the retractable cargo cover. As we had a 50% off from Costco. This was planed at the time of purchase. Then they offered to install it for us for free, So I let them..

Asked about the oil: do they use the Mazda 0-20 with molybdenum they said no Mazda said to use castrol full synthetic 0-20. I asked about the Mazda with moly and they said no castrol is what they use.

Not sure how much if any moly is in the castrol 0-20 synthetic.

But over all it took about 30-40 min and I'm very happy with my dealer. (My dealer - Mazda of Gladstone)
