1.8 swap for a 2.0... could we benefit from this?

So I just happen to be reading some stuff on the protege 1.8 motor, and how it has a thicker block wall and shorter and fatter rods that can handle boost better. Are the blocks able to just be swapped out? (2.0 MSP block for a 1.8 protege block) or would we need to also change the head and other components? I know we would probably lose power going from a 2.0 to a 1.8 but then you could easly gain the power back by boosting more (I think someone posted that the 1.8 blocks could hold up to 17-20psi). And could we possibly benefit from boring out the 1.8 block to 2.0 and keeping the shorter/fatter stock rods in there? Would the revs be quicker and higher with this setup also? I know nothing about building a block, this is why Im asking! I was just wondering if this could be done and could have its benefits or is it just a stupid idea. (cabpatch)

I could be mistaken the 1.8 for the 1.6 (stronger block and stronger rods) but either way still wondering if anyone has any insight on this...

You are mistaking it for the 1.6L found in the DX's and some LX's. I have seen some good horsepower numbers on stock internals, I believe in the low 2XX's but that was at like 17psi. That amount of boost on a built 2.0 would exceed the 300 mark depending on mods. You might also loose a bit of low end torque with the 1.6. So it would be cool and different, but I dont think it would be worth it

Yeah It prolly was the 1.6 I was reading about... But I was wondering what if you bored it from a 1.6 to a 2.0? So you're pretty much running a more solid block, shorter and more solid stock rods which should give you a faster and more higher rev than the stock 2.0 with its longer and thinner rods.

The head is different I believe. I know for sure the valvetrain is cuz I have held cams for the BP series and the FSDE motor in my hands and they are way different. A parts supplier sent me the wrong cams for a previous FS series motor build. Other than that I don't know the differences but just stick with the 2.0

Yeah If you couldnt just swap out the blocks then it would be most likely more expensive than just getting a forged motor. I had no real plans on doing this I was just wondering if it was possible.

well, first there's two 1.8L motors that I think you could be talking about, the one that was also in the mitia that other people were talking about, and the 1.8L that's basicaly a smaller 2.0L that was in the 99-00 gen 3's (the one that I have and am about to discuss). If you mean the older 1.8L, then no. They're totaly different and would require fab work to put into your car. If you mean the 99-00 ES Gen 3 1.8L(which I'm pretty sure you do), then:

you'll need the valvetrain(and pretty much everything from the block-up engine wise, minus sensors,) from the 1.8L, and the coilpacks/coilpack braket, since the 1.8L has their coilpack arrangement out in front of the engine instead of right over the plugs. Otherwise all your other bolt-ons can fit right on. it's the same design as the 2.0L, just .2L smaller (ughdance) idk if you saw my 1.8L I had, but if it wern't for the coilpacks it could easily be mistaken for a 2.0L, so afaik all you would need are the engine parts. . The rods are thicker than the 2.0L's, but imo, the 1.8L is something that you'd rather start with than upgrade to, because it's just not really that big of a difference if it's going to cost you alot money wise.

Your talking about the FP-DE. Its like you said an f series just .2L smaller.

for all the work, cost, sweat, tears, an curse words...I'd go with a K-series swap. I mean hell, it's possible!

if you are going to swap anything in that would be worth the time it would be a fe3 (fe DOHC) motor. makes the 1.6l and 1.8l swaps seems pointless. 400whp stock bottom end, vr6 valvesprings are drop in for reving to 8k. You can make a stroker kit using the crank from a 2.2l sohc FE for minimal amounts of cash. Best 4 cyl mazda made up until the current mazdas 2.3l i think and they are cheap as ****. just need a stand alone ems and custom stuff for the swap. would be the same headache as a 1.6l or 1.8l swap but actually worth it in the end.
