Need Help!!

So last night I was merging onto the expressway, accelerated and shifted to 6th and the clutch pedal kind of stayed pressed down after I let off on it. I put my toe under it and pulled it back, shifts seemed harsher after that. I was able to get home but this morning I couldn't get it into gear. The pedal doesn't have much resistance for most of the travel, then at the end I have to really push to engage it to start the car. I can't shift into any gear now.

Anyone have any experience with this? Is this just a clutch problem or is the tranny affected? Someone said that it might be the clutch cylinder instead? Any input is appreciated.

I've already ordered the ACT clutch/flywheel package from PG.

Check Fluid levels?

If you can shift easily under 1800rpm then the slave and master should be ok and working.

take your car up past 2200rpm, to saw 3500 and depress the clutch. if the revs dont drop then your clutch is gone. the same thing happened to me and i needed a new one. [/story].

Fluid levels looked fine, last checked less than a month ago. Can't shift at all, paperweight mode right now.

This one should get a laugh... 06 MS6... 99,3xx miles.

After I get it started, and push on the clutch, it feels like a grinding/bumping. Can't get into gear.

It's definitely the clutch dude. I had a similar situation. Lok to spend 1300+ at the dealer for an OEM one to be installed. I say, go to an independent shop in the area and have them do it. It should cost you around 600 bucks if they're nice. Good Luck.

Ken at PG recommended the ACT clutch/flywheel package. Stealership quoted me about $1100 plus installation. Should be arriving today or tomorrow and installed on Friday.

Before you go installing hard parts, take a look at your clutch fluid. It sounds like the slave cylinder on your clutch has taken a crap. Check the fluid level and also grab the boot on the slave cylinder and squeeze it, if fluid comes out, replace the $40 slave cylinder and blead the system and you should be good to go. You need to do some diagnostic work before you throw some parts at the car. Symptoms that the slave is going bad is that the pedal feel is inconsistent and when it fails, the pedal will go to the floor and not return. Try this when you can... put the car in gear with the engine off, MAKE SURE THERE IS NOTHING IN FRONT OF THE CAR, start the car. If the slave cylinder is bad the car will start to move, if the clutch is bad the car will not move at all.

Thanks man. Car moves, so it's the cylinder right? What explains the grinding/bumping I feel in the pedal then? Are slave cylinders universal or do I need to go through Mazda?

oh btw. just cuz the clutch is fried does not mean the car will not move. my clutch disk was falling apart and the flywheel was faced badly. the car still held all the power.

so... that being said, try what i posted too because i had the exact same symptoms.

The car is moving because the slave cylinder is not actuating the clutch. The car will not shift when you are moving because the trans. input shaft will be moving at a different speed then the output shaft. You need the clutch to be disengaged to allow the input shaft to stop turning the same speed as the engine and allow the gears to mesh. You can drive the car, but you need to rev match to shift. When you come to a stop you can turn the car off, put it in gear and then start the car when you need to move again. I would just replace the slave cylinder though, you should be able to get one at a parts store, like Advance or Autozone. You will need to bleed the system though after you change the slave cylinder.

P.S. my last response was really posted by my son MX5Racer; he was signed on to my laptop, didn't realize I was signed on as my login.

Yeah, what he said.

Both the dealer and Ken at PG told me the cylinder is specific to the model, so I had to order it. I'll keep you guys posted on this when I have it taken in this week.

At 99k it's probably about time for an upgraded clutch anyway.
