2.5L NA Cracked Cylinder Head with Oil Leaking

So, did Mazda resolve the cracked head issue for your CX-5?
Yes. It was all under the powertrain warranty at the time.

Mind you, it took them over 6 months to get the parts in (at the time). I was told to just keep driving it around and come back in to top up the oil if it gets low. Only had to top it up once in the 10 months from symptoms (smell in the cabin) to full repair.

It’ll continue to extend the coverage to the newer MY’s as the time goes on, as Mazda has decided NOT to update the cylinder head for the 2.5L NA with cylinder deactivation since 2018 MY for various reasons.

The cylinder head is still the same since 2018, the possibility of cracking will always be there.

The SA says there’s a “Cylinder head bolt measuring technique” video created by Mazda to show dealer’s technicians how to. Hope those techs would watch it before they reuse the head bolts for the head replacement job.

New head bolts used to be included in this head assembly part list, but somehow Mazda has decided not to be included may be to save some $$$?
You mean the same design from 2018 head is currently on the present NA engine, and will most likely be on the 2026 models?

June 25,

2019 CX-5 with 25K miles, and smelled something burning. Took it to Mazda dealer, and the service advisor know right away what is the problem. Took it back to the service bay and verified the cracked cylinder head. She told me that she'll contact Mazda to get it replaced, and all I have to pay is the "unknown deductible", and gave me a loaner 2025 CX-5

Today,

She called and told me that Mazda will replaced the head and I pay a $500 deductible to cover the one year warranty of the new head?

Wondering if the $500 "deductible" is just some random amount to cover the loaner and some "extra" profit? But, consider what others had paid out of pocket for the out of warranty work . I think $500 is fair amount?

It will take about two weeks to get the parts in from Japan and replace it.
The service has been completed. It only took 6 weeks. One extra week due to failed quality control (drive for 50 miles), there was a leak from the gasket. They will do a engine cleaning. Hmm, must been a big leak from the gasket?

mazdaswag shows different part numbers for the head for 2018 and 2024.

2018: PYFA-10-100E
2024: PYYA-10-SJ0A

No idea what the differences are. There 2024 head is quite a bit more expensive than the 2018 part.

Based on the first Service Alert, SA-058/20, the PYY4-10-SJ0 is the new cylinder head set which includes cylinder head, (previous head assembly, PYFA-10-100F)、valve cotter、valve SPG-UP seat、valve spring、outer-EX valve spring、inlet valve、exhaust valve. P/N 0000-99-SCX5 then includes PYY4-10-SJ0 cylinder head set and many other parts including gaskets and head bolts. In the latest SA-037/23 the head bolts are no longer in the parts list for head replacement, hence P/N 0000-99-SCX5 which includes head bolts may no longer been used.

If you read the original Service Alert, SA-058/20, it explained it very clearly that PYY4-10-SJ0 is the new cylinder head set which includes cylinder head, (older assembly, should be PYFA-10-100F)、valve cotter、valve SPG-UP seat、valve spring、outer-EX valve spring、inlet valve、exhaust valve. The leak is from the valve cover gasket.

They added extra 250 miles! Of course, the tank was filled and had a loaner for the full time.

The leak is from the valve cover gasket.
Yes high temperature silicone sealant needs to be applied at several joint locations during valve cover gasket installation. I bet the tech didn’t apply the sealant properly at first which caused the oil leak.

Somewhere upthread I though I saw a comment that the cylinder head being used for replacement on my 2018 head that cracked in February have not been revised with a better improved casting. I seem to remember from either Mazda USA or the dealer service writer stated that the head had been updated to a newer design. Can somebody clarify my the head is a newer part?

No, the cylinder head itself has airways been the same on the 2.5L NA with cylinder deactivation since 2018. MNAO did create a new part number for a complete cylinder head set with valves and other things pre-installed to shorten the labor time of head replacement. See post #588 above.

My understanding is that the head in the Turbos was redesigned (they had a similar issue except it was leaking out coolant) and the non-Turbo is still using the same head as before.

Damn, the crack could happen again. I only drive about 5000 miles a year now in retirement with 63k on the odometer. I will be selling my car at around 90k to avoid a crack, although this will be years down the road.
