Feel free to believe and maintain AT as you prefer, certainly the right thing to do based on your beliefs. Agreed, no fluid lasts forever, nor does any vehicle or vehicle component. Hondas creative editing to make their car appear to cost less back when, oil change intervals, brake fluid change intervals, coolant change intervals not applicable to ATF discussion.

Again, I'd recommend you do what makes you feel good and based on your beliefs.

I actually happened across that a while ago before anyone was posting about ATF changed here, and it really made me consider being proactive about my maintenance. This is my first bought new/no cosigner car and I'd rather drop $3000 on aftermarket ( :) ) than a part failure that could have been prevented by maintenance (at the least you get a chance to notice a potential problem).
 
The early CX5s had a manufacturing defect and there was an in-line manufacturing change made. It'll fail REALLY early if yours had the issue

Wow quite interesting and a good reminder as to why some might not want to own a CX-9 (but I never wanted one fortunately), but unrelated to CX-5 topic here.

Even if we were talking about the CX-9, no guarantee that frequent fluid changes would prevent early failure of a weak and defective transmission. And if the fluid change is done incorrectly by somebody other than dealership service department, the possibility of a failure not covered by factory warranty only increases, talk about expensive out of pocket scenario.

I assume you're referring to the valve assembly that failed on several forum members' vehicles?
 
Since I am here again, I'll post some more.

I'd done full ATF change on my other car three times when I had it.

It was actually the kind of work I really enjoyed a lot. Once I had figured out the flow of ATF to the cooler and had my hoses and canisters ready it was quick.

Another aspect of this was that I knew what the tranny really got in terms of fluid/level/quality. Also, the "flush" was not forced by outside of the system pressure.
Lastly, all fluid got exchanged including fluid sitting in TC.

I just drained my atf fluid. Dropped the pan. It did have some silver sludge, so I am glad that is clean now. I replaced the strainer filter. Had to provide the part number to dealer parts guy. Lol. He swore up and down it did not have one.

BTW. Can only do a drain and fill. Using the pump method off of the cooler will not work. Only two hoses. Coolant in\out. No atf flow hose. I used to used the pumping method on my 2007 3

So, how is the ATF cooled then? I am confused here.

ATF must flow into the cooler and out, right? So, couldn't you just take cooler out to get old ATF out and fill through the top to replace all of it?

2 years old come this July. 35000 kms. Lots of city driving. Lol. Believe me. Oil looked thin and dirty. Like the video.

To answer another quote. Not sure how the fluid is really cooled. It could be cooled heat sink like. There is an oring where cooler mounts flush to trans. Its possible trans fluid moves around inside, but not by hoses. When I run down the road wit my data stream program. It says the trans temp is exactly the same as the coolant temp. Odd. It should fluctuate under some load.

Look at your radiator, should be hose to and from your transmission.

That's what we are talking about. There are only coolant lines running from the rad to the cooler. In the past, 4 lines went into cooler. 2 coolant, 2 atf. We could attach a clear hose to the outbound atf hose at the cooler and use it to pump out atf. Instead of just drain and fill. Not an option now as there is no atf hoses. Cooler is flush mounted.
 
Hm, well since you're not using the torque convertor on the skyactive above 5mph heat generation will be much less of an issue anyway.

Cooler is flush mounted against what?

Usually the 'cooler' is to cool/heat the oil but the transmission had an extra oil to water cooler across the bottom of the transmission. If the latter is gone, there's not much you can diy.

And for those looking for a non-dealer item, the Amsoil Signature Series ATF meets/exceeds the spec. I loved it in my Mazda3/5/6 5-speed auto and it's in my girlfriend's right now.

So this new ZF spec, is it just in the skyactive transmissions or is it also used elsewhere?

Ask the dealer or peek in a service manual, I'd have a spare handy and replace it with new, you can keep alternating in the future and it's better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

Very good info. I did not realize that, neither did I know that TC does not get used outside of below 5MPH.
