Dislikes about your MAZDA 5

Wow, nobody has mentioned that it has as much torque as a pencil rolling across a level desk? A V6 probably wouldn't even hurt the fuel economy, but I'd prefer that new whiz-bang diesel or a FSI turbo four...

I'd rather have a small diesel, though the price would jump dramatically.

I like the 5, it's a simple people mover, big enough for most families, even good on long vacations with a roof box, and the price is good because it **doesn't** have all the extra crap like power doors/liftgate.

Agreed. We've had it a week and, like the Miata, it kinda gets under my skin. I find myself wanting to pop around town in it instead of my big gnarly turbo Subaru. Maybe it's the newness of it, but it's a compelling car.

Now I just have to make the radio sound better before windows-up season.

Mine has an odd "clunk" from somewhere up front as I pull away towards the first or second gear change. Happens only once after the car has sat for awhile and never happens again for the rest of the trip.

Any ideas?

Ac compressor engaging loudly I hate the sound bang

Unless it's doing it when I don't have the AC on, it's not that. It also only does it exactly once per trip. I can actually feel it through the gas pedal or brake.

The A/C can actually be on and there not be any lights on. It happens sometimes when we change drivers from one day to the other. Amber and I use the controls differently. I'm not sure what is happening actually, but I have to hit the button and force it off whenever I start the car.

I kind of wonder. I'm the only driver (for now), and always turn the A/C off. I also seldom use the defroster setting (which, in my Miata, turns on the A/C whether I have it on or not--I disabled that :)), so my head's itching...

IDK why you would disable the A/C for defrost; it's there to remove the humidity from the air so it DOESN'T cloud over.
the A/C is NOT just for cool air, it removes the moisture.

It's a Miata/convertible thing: The most effective way to keep warm is not to blow hot air right in your face, but, rather, to blow it at the windshield and let it waft over you. The Miata, however, is quite sensitive to the A/C running. Hence, I'd rather disable the A/C unless I explicitly turn it on. I honestly don't know why car companies have the thing turning on automatically for any reason. If I want it on, I can flick a switch or push a button, thank you very much.

That said, do you guys think my noise is just the A/C compressor being turned on?

it's a Miata thing. The cabin is so small, heat or equal temp air will defrost any window just fine. The purist don't use AC and depower PS as well (both suck what little power it had). I also didn't have AC and the only time when it really sucked is sitting in traffic on a 100+ day -never again... As long as there's air flow, you are good.

On another note, I F*ing hate this car's HVAC. It is a cool/cold 70 degree day and with the fan on at 68 degree and recir off, it blows warm air! WTF?

I've noticed that as well, this afternoon most recently. It does it after driving somewhere and parking for a while. Once you take off again, it's like the exhaust has heated up the entire firewall area including all air ductwork, so it takes a long time for it to cool back down. Today it took about 5 miles for it to cool down to close to ambient.

I've heard lots of people say this but I haven't yet seen a good explanation for it. Please explain it to me.

The question is more why you would have the A/C automatically turn on for any reason whatsoever. That I have yet to get a satisfactory response on. Telling me how the A/C works in theory does not explain that.

sorry, I thought it did. then I think 'automatic' is the important word there; the system determines there is too much humidity in the air, so it 'knows' there is a likelihood of the windows fogging up. so it turns the A/C on.

I think the system works pretty well; I'm not one for second guessing the engineers who designed it.

The system doesn't know when I want it to run. I'm smart enough to figure it out. End of story.

I highly doubt this car or any standard production car (ultra luxury cars not withstanding) has a hygrometer. The HVAC system only has a standard temp sensor (prob a cheap and not very accurate one) that will shut off the AC compressor when it detects the temp is equal to or below you have it set at. It will remain on but blow air until it detects that it is above a certain threshold compared to what you have it set at. You may feel the temp change once the AC is off/on but the temp sensor (due to proximity to vents) may not detect the change. I bet if you add some wiring and put the temp sensor all the way in the back hatch (3d row) the AC will never turn off in Auto mode -unless it is winter.

You are giving the engineers too much credit. I would second guess them b/c it seems their work is unrefined (not thoroughly tested) and not all engineers are created equal. Mazda just does not have the time or money to invest in refining little things. Step up to any entry luxury brand and these little things are sorted out. Not knocking Mazda engineers but the crme of the crop would have gone to one of Japans big three (Toyota, Honda, Nissan).

anyone else notice a substantial volume jump on the OEM stereo between volume 4 and 5 ? For cabin conversation with music it seems 4 is too low and 5 is too loud, the rest of the increments are subtle. 2007 GT.

I can accept this if it was true, however, we just got into the car and started it up… Also, if you turn OFF the air and turn OFF recirc (allowing outside air to come it), it lets in ambient outside air, which is COOL! We then turn ON the air but kept recirc OFF and it blows warm air again! Give it a try next time and let me know what you feel. Would be interested in hearing what others are feeling.
