Mazda5 real-world Mileage numbers

Just filled up my 2012 for the first time last night.

Sport, automatic: 80% highway driving, 20% urban driving, 298.2 miles, 10.774 gallons = 27.677 mpg.

I'm going to be keeping track of my fuel economy on both http://www.truedelta.com and on http://www.fueleconomy.gov once they update their information with 2012 models. I'll post more numbers here but you can check there, too.

I did not; I had a Tahoe. The fuel economy on the 5 is significantly better. (2thumbs)

It cant NOT be better lol. On the plus side, you now have a useable third row too. I recently rented a Tahoe for the weekend in Colorado and it did pretty good on gas considering, but I was way happier when I got home to my 5 again. Welcome to the forum!

259.4 miles, 9.553 gallons, 70% highway/30% urban = 27.1 mpg

Also, my 2012 Sport AT spins ~2350 rpm at 70 mph.

gas is $4.15 per gallon over here. i started driving Prius style this week and got 387 miles out of a 13.88 gallon fill-up, which to me is decent. still, it cost me $58. i drive 2000+/mo so the rising gas price impacts my budget. i love my 5 and road trips. what can i do to improve fuel economy besides perhaps losing 5 pounds? (boom01)

Have you ever visited the ecomodder website? They have many suggestions on improving mileage...including driving style (by far the greatest impact on mileage), modifications to your car, and other things.

One thing they talk about is NOT using the cruise control, but accelerating downhill to get your speed up (over the speed limit if possible) and then when going uphill back off the accelerator below the point your accelerating, or even maintaining speed. It's kind of opposite of how the cruise control works. Getting a Scangauge or other device that can give instant MPG readouts is really helpful for getting the hang of doing this.

One other way to save gas money, is just not driving as much. Whenever possible, combine trips so you're on the road less.

Check out http://ecomodder.com/

I also have been driving in "granny" mode all week. I commute 31 miles (one way). I can't remember the last time I drove at the speed limit for so long! So far after filling up on Monday, and driving all week, plus side trips, I'm at 350+ miles with a quarter tank left to go. I won't push too much past when the light comes on. I'll update my mileage and report..

I noticed when I test drove a 2012 that the RPM's on the freeway were a little less than my 08. This must be how they were able to get an mpg or two more out of them on the EPA cycle.

That's what I figure, but the 2012 also comes with the 2.5 version of the Duratec I-4, so I imagine there's a bit of improvement from reduced friction and the like, too. I'm fairly certain that the reason the 2.5 in the Mazda5 is just a stop-gap measure until the Sky powertrains hit in a year or two anyway.

that's much better than what i got, when i hit 350+ miles, the orange light would have come on already. does granny mode mean 55 or 60 when the limit is 65?

Lol. No. I normally drive at about 70 or 75mph on the hiways...Now I put the cruise on 65 mph, get in the right lane and watch the madness...

Fueueconomy.gov appears to be on the blink (at least on my page). I got 28mpg last week. Accuracy is flexible in that I didn't go TOO far after the light came on and $50 worth of gas filled teh car but not to the point where the pump clicked off...Anyway..I'll take 28mpg anyday, so I'm happy..

i stay between 65 and 70 except when i need to pass another vehicle. after doing this for a week, i have grown so patient that i don't even try to pass others. i should just wake up 25 minutes early to allow time for granny driving. >_<

my last fill-up was 12.6 gallons at $4.179 per gallon, the meter shows 377 miles from my last fill-up, so that makes my mpg close to 30? am i doing the math right? i always fill the tank until the nozzle clicks and stops.

thanks. i think you or someone else recommended the ecomodder site to me before, and i did not find the 65+ efficiency mods to be particularly useful. the 100+ hypermiling tips though, which i read carefully this time, are very helpful.

we've been consistently getting 285-300 miles per tanks; used to take $30-35 to fill up, now it's above $46.
my wife has been collecting points on her grocery store card though; she got EIGHTY CENTS off per gallon the other day! we paid $3.09/gal!
