Rear Diff Oil Change

I have about 38K on my MS6 and I was looking through the service manual and it says to change the rear diff oil at 28,100 miles. What is involved with changing this oil? If you have changed it, at mileage mileage did you do it at and what type of oil did you use? Thanks in advance for your help!

The dealership changed my rear diff at about 37xxx miles. Then I had the rear diff oil changed with amsoil sever gear fluid at around 70xxx miles along with the transmission and transfer case fluids.

As far as what is involved, I took it to a local performance shop here in Houston.

I was a very, very naughty monkey and didn't change my rear diff, PTO, and tranny fluids until 90k (no). I'm glad I did and I certainly won't wait that long to do it the next time (perhaps at 120k).

It's a fairly simple process, much like changing oil: drain old fluids and add new ones. The only tricky part is the fact that you need a hand pump to get the new fluids in there.

I used Redline fluids on all three, specifically 75W90 GL-5 on the rear diff.

lol naughty monkey? Hahahaha. Its a simple change, I totally agree with NAUGHTY monkey over there Mr Davidson. And if you have 1st to 2nd gear problems or nuetral to 1st gear like most of us, changing your tranny oil will help a whole lot. By the way you didn't say anything about your tranny oil. You should do both of them at once (transmission and rear dif). What is PTO? I haven't changed that yet I think.

WHAT IS PTO DAVIDSON!?!?!? Daym I am kind of panicking now lol. I am at 48k and I think I haven't changed my PTO fluid. PTO Police Track Official?

Power Take-Off Unit (PTO)... I think what davidson means is changing the transfercase oil which is basically attached to your tranny. im sure there is a how-to on changing all 3 of the fluids. i did mine at around 30k and the tranny and transfercase fluids were all good but my rear diff was ready for the change, it had a silverish look when the oil was coming out. make sure u buy an extra quart of oil since when using the hand pump some spills out.

Like Bulgsta said, the PTO is the transfer case. I did do all three at the same time. You might as well do all three while you're under there, especially since the PTO and rear diff use the same oil.

This is the thread that I followed when I was doing this:
