i just replaced my alternator today, (first time changing alternator on any car)
now the problem is that my car feels to rough... specially my steering wheel when im turning in any direction....

i pulled the alternator from up above not from down below i took some parts out it was 2 black circular things i believe it was the cruise control and i dont know what was the other thing..... if that helps any of you helping finding whats going on with my car now..... i appreciate any help...tanks..

My first guess is that you power steering pump belt is loose. I had that on a 626 once and was convinced my steering pump was going out - no squeal, just a vibe in the wheel when I turned.

+1, although you were slightly ambiguous with your description of the problem.

my car is back to normal is not running rough anymore the steering wheel problem is fix but there's another problem.....like i said i bough a new alternator and i installed on my car yesterday i thought the battery light will go off but it stayed on after i replaced the alternator, i went back to autozone to check my battery, they tested and they told me my old alternator killed my battery so i had to buy a new one....now i have a new alternator and a new battery and the battery light is still on....any help on whats going on.....

i have another question...why is my car have a high rpm at @ 40mph my rpm is about 3500...when i stop or park on neutral my rpm is on 600 without me pressing on the gas sometimes it jumps up and down from 600 to 700 constantly.... any pointers on what i need to check..TANKS in advance ...

tanks rabid and durwood for the respond

If the battery light is on, it's possible you didn't tighten the belt enough, and it's slipping. Or the alternator is bad. Grab a voltmeter and measure the voltage when running, and when off. Should be ~14 when running, and ~13 when off.

As for your rpm, I don't have an auto, and I'm used to metric units, but 3500 rpm at 40mph sounds about right. As for your idle, I'd guess your EGR may be slightly fouled.

checked belt and its installed right is not loose or to tight, alternator is new, battery is new the only thing is that plastic thing on the alternator the one the covers the bolt that hold one of the wires is missing but i don't think thats whats creating the problem ......im wondering is there a fuse, relay, or sensor that i might have blown or burn if there is where can i locate this three things?

about the rpms im driving a manual mp5, i recently cleaned EGR, i was having that problem before i cleaned it...

did you test the voltage? Also, just got back from a drive 3500 rpm at 40mph is 3rd gear, shift to 4th.

umm.... make sure you plug the alternator plug in good.... when i changed mine the first time ... it wasn't in good... just a thought

i rechecked the alternator plug and is good..im only missing the plastic cover the cover the plug but i dont think thats the problem....is there a fuse that goes from the battery to the alternator i cant find it like some other cars have..

Is the output going up when running (i didn't see an answer)?

Also - that cover is so that any random metal object won't short it & ruin it. Get it covered (somehow).

it end up being a bad alternator from autozone, i suppose when you buy a new alternator from autozone is good to ask them to recheck the alternator before you buy it from them since their not 100% good....... they sale "rebuilt alternators"

Wasn't there a red sticker on it saying it couldn't be tested when not on the car? Mine did. Still sucks tho. Lifetime warranty FTW.

Funny that I found this thread since the EXACT same thing happened to me..bought an alternator from autozone and it caused my rpm to be really high when starting the car. Then the battery light came back on..then it died. Now they are telling me they have to bench test it..when you clearly cannot.

Did they hassle you with the exchange?
