Passing etiquette?

All,

So I am driving home yesterday on a two lane highway (2 lanes -- same direction.) and I come upon (ironically) a brand new RX-8 in the high speed lane. He is doing slightly over the speed limit, and there is a car on his right.

I didn't ride his butt, but I waited for him to (slowly) pass the car and get over. Rather than get over, however, he just continues in the high speed lane. I waited... I waited... finally I gave a quick flash of my lights and he moved over immediately.

Now...the second I pass him... he yanks his car right behind me and throws on his high beams... What a jerk! I won't say what happened next because of forum restrictions, but let's just say he shortly wasn't on my butt anymore and never got close to it again. (Sorry RX-8 fans...)

I have driven in a lot of places, and I have never had a problem with this system. In Germany it is very common to flash your lights as you approach someone in the high speed lane.

I myself have had others do this to me, and have never taken offense. My understanding is it simply means, "Hey, you might not have noticed me behind you and I would like to pass. Please move over."

I wouldn't flash someone who was passing others, or had no place to go. Just wondering if I am alone on this opinion.

myeh, i do the same, if you're in the right and someone wants to go, as long as its safe, get the hell outa the way.

I've flicked my brights several times, its just the assholes in the world that feel they need to take offense to it and get pissed. I had one guy swerve at me while i was doing 80 on the highway.

Some people are just asshats and it doesnt matter what you do.

don't flash next time. just go around him. in TX they drive on the shoulder to let you go around them.

thats touchy, if it was me i would wait to see what the person does, then if they still just stayed there after a mile or so id pass them in the right lane. yea its not right but i know if i got flashed by someone i would get angry, but then again i would never stay in the passing lane long enough for that to happen.

I am normally in the right hand lane. Only time I'm in the passing lane is to pass, or, if coming up on an onramp and traffic is trying to merge. I have had an idiot in a civic come ripping up behind me doing over 100 in a 65mph section of the road. I was in the left lane because of a semi trying to merge onto the highway. Rather than let the semi merge, he puts his brights on, drops a gear or 2 and squeezes between me and the semi in about a half lane. Me and the rig both end up half on the shoulder due to this idiot.

As etiquet, (my spelling sucks) yeah, if someone is coming up behind you, and you're in the passing lane and it is safe for you to get over, do so. A quick flash of the brights is enough to let me know you want to pass. Now, if you get on my butt and just turn the brights on till I move, I'm slowing down till there is no way you're going around me. Just a quick flash is all it takes.

I still have yet to install the 55watt drivinglights in my rear window. I gotta find the time to do that. I miss them. I had a set on the roof rack of my Jeep. Someone comes behind you and puts the brights on, I turned on the driving beam lights facing backwards and magically, thier brights were no longer on.

we don't like that kind of crap in IL. All that extra crap is uneccessary. my opinion evilmonkey. that is what the guy is asking for..

it would actually have been driving ettiquette for him to get out of the way lol...

anytime i dont feel like driving fast and im in the left lane and can see someone coming up on me that is going faster, i move over to the right...cuz thats what I'd like them to do for me if it was the other way around...

Now if you flew up behind me, rode my ass and flashed your brights over and over then i'd probably let of the gas and go slower...

if someone if following me, I move out of the way and let the guy pass me up. If you are going to put lights on me, then you are going to go around me probably staring at a midle finger the whole time..

when i was in the philippines, if you want to pass someone all you do is give a quick two taps to the horn and they move over, no questions asked, no pissed off drivers and everyone's happy, except when you realize you're in the philippines and it's hot and humid and you have a giant cockroach in your shoe while there's a cow in the middle of the road.

I think it is wrong to pass on the right. Not only is it more dangerous, legally (in most states anyway) you are only supposed to pass on the left.

I wouldn't be offended if someone flashed me... as long as I was given the opportunity to move over. Flash5 --- you said it would bother you if someone did it, but then again you would never be in that situation.

Keep Right Except to Pass --- I see these signs everywhere.

In MD...people LOVE to drive in the left hand lane. You flash them....they get upset... you pass them on the right and they often speed up, or get upset. I say those people are just jerks.

I stay to the right whenever possible. It also helps keep a cop's radar off of you.

^Lmao..

lol i agree. but its typically standard for someone to ive a quick little blip(1 tap) of the brights to notify you that they want to go around....thats fine...anymore than that is a no no

yes, yes We finally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Sanblaster, Evil Monkey, and I are really on the same page globally...

I move over to the right when someone wants to pass. So do they.
If you don't in a reasonable amount of time when it is obviously safe to do so, you have no right to get upset if I give you a quick flash.
