Tranny problems?

I was driving my car earlier and i shifted into third and was exelerating up a hill not even beating on it and i hear boom crunch griiiiiiiinnnnnnddd.. I hear about so many problems with these transmissions, but the only thing i can think is that 3rd gear just sheared off. Is that the norm? If so these trannys are junk!! What to do now? I dont know if i should bother trying to get a better gear set, go with an automatic or just throw 3rd gear in the car and sell it. I had plans to put a bigger turbo on the car come spring, but the more and more reading i do on this site the more scared i am of just throwing money away. I bought the car to drive, but i dont like to work on em every spare second i get. Are there any cars from japan that came AWD? that i might be able to get parts from to make mine AWD? Suggestions????

The car has a built motor, and made like 240 ish on a mustang dyno.

I did buy that (daedalus) car! And it still moves in other gears, thats why i think 3rd is just screwed, it kind groud going into 3rd. When we were rolling doen the road right after it made the noise it didnt seem to move in 3rd all that well.

Is there a way to buy REALLY good parts to beef up this tranny? or maybe buy used parts from overseas to convert to AWD?

if the syncros were bad it would have a hard time getting into gear, NOT go into gear yet grind really bad like the teeth on 3rd are sheared off. From the sound of everything i might just find a justyard tranny, slap it in with the LSD and sell the car? I dont want a car thats going to break a tranny 3 times a year. From what i have been reading that is a common thing.

It is the Syncros that blew your third...

That is a 100% normal and common problem with this car.

Rebuilding may not be an option, you might have good luck at a salvage yard.

Hmm. Odd you think that, it may have actually been the case. We're at 27psi on our track Protege, and we had the exact symptoms as he has and we cracked opened the transmission to find teeth sheared off.

You bought that car, which was an investment. Expect the investment to continue. Thousands of dollars.

I understand that, but i also thought the aftermarket was alittle better for these cars! I dont mind throwing some money at it if the money doesnt seem wasted. It seems like thr trannys are the weak link. What all do you guys have done to your race car? I really like the car, but its already putting a sour taste in my mouth and i have only had it a few weeks.

pm focus if you want some great tranny info. You could always just change 3rd and 5th to the gtx gears if you only ****** up the gear. I dont think that gear's breaking are all that common in these cars...the LSD breaking in half is very common...but I dont see all that many posts in regards to ****** up gears...although I am sure they are far from bullet proof

I called these guys http://www.tbkperformance.com/ and they sell BILLET gears 3rd and 4th for $550 each. They have them in there race car and they say there indistructable. So it looks like i'll be going with 3rd for now, and if 4th breaks later i will replace it to. Guess i'll have the LSD welded up when its out too. I think this will work fine for what i have in mind. I dont really want anymore than 325 to the wheels. Anymore than that and it'll be a pain in the ass to drive.

Rebuilding the trans is a lengthy trial if you dont have experience with transmissions, and not always the best option. You cant put an auto in this vehicle without changing the the ECU and retuning the car.

Also, auto's for the protege arent (generally) durable for a boosted application. (and I wouldnt touch that though on daedelus's car).

If I was you? I would buy a new trans. Head over to SpeedCircuit.net Look under proteges and you will see a transmission section. There you will find full trans. to buy.

as far as AWD, there was a model of Protege5 that was built with AWD, but it has never been tried and proven sucessful in the MSP due to the amount of work it would take to even install. Youre better off staying with the FWD setup as its not very practical financially.

The car has a microtech, so i can put an auto in it if i decide that.

Lentech sells a focus tranny which to my understanding is the same as MSP, that will hold 500 WHP.. Wouldnt touch what on daedalus's car?

The transmission you suggested i buy is a stock trans that is used! I can buy one with a warranty out of a local junk yard for $500, so that makes no sence to me, unless i just plan on selling it.

As far as the AWD thing goes it would be great to get any info possible on doing that? I own my own business, make an alright living and dont care much (within reason) about the finance side of it, If i put my mind to it i will usually do it. If i could have the only AWD MSP in the world, that would be pretty cool!! That is if i could buy all the parts at a resonable price, the work is not what scares me. I however dont like throwing money away on junk parts.
Any info would be great!!!

Thanks, Cory
