Dynos and MS3...

I dyno'd mine last month on a Dynojet and was disappointed with my results (225 HP/ 254 TQ). And thats with the CAI.

I'll probably be going back on 11/11 to do another pull but this time I'm going to bring some ice for the IC and see if that helps.

Which CIA did you buy?
I would expect that from a stock MS3...actually more in the 230 range...
But I would have to say that having your hood open was not a good idea since you are not getting air flow through your intercooler...

Have you gone for that second visit to the dyno? Has the ice helped?
I would think that would be cheating (using ice) somewhat, since the intercooler would not normally be that cold.

I have a MS CAI. Its in my sig ;)

No I haven't gone back yet. As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm going back on the 11th of next month.

And yeah, the hood was open but it was also open on the other MS3's that were there that put down larger numbers with the same mods. Anyways, they couldn't close the hood all the way if they wanted to since they have the RPM cable coming from the engine bay. The IC shroud wouldn't seal right on the ducting which would probably mess things up as well.

And the ice will melt pretty fast so I don't expect the IC to be super cold (<50 degs). Our IC's don't take much to get heat soaked and no shop fan can realistically provide enough airflow to simulate real world driving conditions. The intake temps really heat up when the car is just sitting there idling.

And as mentioned before, absolute numbers don't mean much on dynos anyways. They're tuning tools to compare relative changes. The only reason I want to take mine back in is to verify the numbers since I want a good baseline before I do any real mods. Plus, I want to log some different parameters this time. :)

So you're not worried why your car put down lower numbers than the other MS3 that ran before you?

My thoughts are going crazy, like, did you break-in the engine properly, or is there something wrong with your engine, ecu, etc...

I would assume the 3 MS3s should be putting down very close numbers on the same dyno if ran back to back... Don't you think?

Here is not a question of different dyno, weather, altitude, etc...
All MS3 should be putting down the same numbers give or take maybe 5-7 HP?

Am I wrong to assume this?

Dynos are different. If you look at Dynojets, they are the standard in which numbers are generally judged by. I wont goto any non dynojet facility because i been on Eddy's and Mustang Dyno's which either give you unrealistic numbers or they are so low, they arent worth reporting.

Dynojets differ from one another. Depending on how much hp they can hold, will increase they weight of the drums. The heavier the drums, the lower the horsepower you will see. Ive taken my truck to several dynojets and the hp ratings are varied by 13 hp.

Than you need to take into consideration whether the dyno facility uses SAE as their results smoothing. Ive seen tuners on the east coast within the lightning community skew the numbers so much by not including correction factors. You see a 788hp lightning running mid 11's.. with that hp, its an easy low 10.

Dyno numbers dont mean a damn thing, ET's do.(drunk)

Yeah, but then ET's take driver experience/talent into affect...

Funny that you saw that... I've lived around the corner from a drag strip for 2 years now and have yet to go visit... LOL
I can here the dragsters from a distance... :)

You gotta go visit man... Ive spent years on the tracks out here and have log books up the yee yee.. Once you get your data and have your ride setup and know what it runs, you can cash in on the bracket races :)

In most cases ETs take driver experience but you can still see where the hp per et ratio is, including a person who cant drive. The 60 foot tells all as the mile per hour.

True but trap speeds generally don't. As long as you can shift ok once the car is moving then traps are generally consistent (for the weather/altitude).

As far as me being worried about my low numbers... Im not that worried ;). I'm a test engineer and know that statistical deviation is a fact of life. Theres averages and then there's standard deviations. Not all engines/cars will put down the same numbers. Not all dynos will output the same numbers for the same cars even on the same day/same conditions. Theres so many variables to consider. There was a AMS tuner on here a while back that mentioned he had some difficulty getting repeatable numbers on the MS3.

The boost on the Mazdaspeed3 is not always consistent depending on which rpm you start the run at. After battling with the car for a little while, I was able to reproduce the same run from the car each time and conduct

As long as my car feels fast and can put down decent numbers at the track (have yet to go) then I'm happy.

So did you feel a big difference between stock and the added CAI...?

Does it help with lag...? I noticed while I got to drive my car for two days before I had to go on business travel(hand)that there is a little lag...maybe its that I haven't gotten used to driving (learned out to drive) the car yet...??
