I'm planning on repairing my motor mounts, but there's a couple ways that I can do it, and I wanna find out which way would be most efficient.
The first method would be to fill the front mounts with 3M window weld, since I've heard it's an easy and cheap way of doing it. But here's my issue: All that I'm finding for 3M window weld is the ribbon-style sealer. I have a feeling that it should be the style that you squeeze out of a tube, but where do you find that stuff? I haven't been able to find any 3M in a tube around here, but I have found other brands at Walmart and such. The brand isn't a huge deal, right? As long as it's waterproof and polyurethane it shouldn't matter, should it?
The second method is using chunks of my old tires. I have 3 tires that are completely shot and one that I will reuse as a full-size spare, although I shouldn't even need half of one for this, right? I need to cut up a tires still, but how effective will this be? I know that my tires are pretty thin (one is bald, but the other 2 I'd use aren't too bad). Should I make sure that one piece of rubber will make it stay, or will it be okay if I have 2 pieces stacked on top of each other? I don't want one side to suddenly fail on me when a piece or two falls out over the terrible MN roads.
Also, I need a step-by-step, as well. I feel like I know the basic method, but how long should I leave the window weld to dry if I go that route? I need to jack up the engine in the middle (between the engine and tranny) right? What's the best point to do that? Pics would be really helpful, although I think I could figure it out. Would it be better to have the rest of the car on jack stands before I jack up the engine?
I know it's a lot of questions, but I need to get my questions answered before I head home for the first half of spring break.
