Motor Mount Repair Quesitons

I'm planning on repairing my motor mounts, but there's a couple ways that I can do it, and I wanna find out which way would be most efficient.

The first method would be to fill the front mounts with 3M window weld, since I've heard it's an easy and cheap way of doing it. But here's my issue: All that I'm finding for 3M window weld is the ribbon-style sealer. I have a feeling that it should be the style that you squeeze out of a tube, but where do you find that stuff? I haven't been able to find any 3M in a tube around here, but I have found other brands at Walmart and such. The brand isn't a huge deal, right? As long as it's waterproof and polyurethane it shouldn't matter, should it?

The second method is using chunks of my old tires. I have 3 tires that are completely shot and one that I will reuse as a full-size spare, although I shouldn't even need half of one for this, right? I need to cut up a tires still, but how effective will this be? I know that my tires are pretty thin (one is bald, but the other 2 I'd use aren't too bad). Should I make sure that one piece of rubber will make it stay, or will it be okay if I have 2 pieces stacked on top of each other? I don't want one side to suddenly fail on me when a piece or two falls out over the terrible MN roads.

Also, I need a step-by-step, as well. I feel like I know the basic method, but how long should I leave the window weld to dry if I go that route? I need to jack up the engine in the middle (between the engine and tranny) right? What's the best point to do that? Pics would be really helpful, although I think I could figure it out. Would it be better to have the rest of the car on jack stands before I jack up the engine?

I know it's a lot of questions, but I need to get my questions answered before I head home for the first half of spring break.

Alright, I will consider those. The first one seems to be the most likely to me.

Also, I talked to Tires Plus about them doing all 4 mounts and they said that their supplier charges some $330 for one of the mounts (didn't specify which one, but not the rear)! Does that seem outrageous to anyone else?

And will I have to take out the mounts, or is there any possible way to do it without taking them out? I don't want to have to space these out over 3 days if I don't have to.

I'de say if you are considering cutting up tires and shoving the chunks into your worn mounts, you might consider the cheapo aftermarket mounts... really cant be as bad as that mess... around $120 for the whole set of four on amazon.

One big advantage of the rubber tire approach is that the mounts don't have to be removed,... Just lift the engine a bit near a mount to open it up then jam something in there.

OMG! Unless your flat broke I would never repair a mount. I just replaced three of mine and it took less than 1 hour.

2 sets jack stands lifted entire car
6" piece of 2.4 placed on floor jack to slightly lift motor/trans
Impact gun to the front replaced in 10 min
impact to the left from bottom just after the radiator 10 min
remove the air intake, battery and battery box used impact wrench back mount replaced in 30 min
looked at the right side mount next to the firewall right below main electrical bundle.... Freaked and stopped my fat monkey hands could just barely get the nuts off to remove the electrical bundle decided to put the nuts back and look at it another day.

Due to I'm about to rebuild the entire front end I'm just going to lower the engine and trans after I rip off the front end.

SO. $330.00 is worth it if you can't do it because they go by labor hour and everything is listed in a labor book that references shop maintenance manuals. And the manuals call for the engine to be lowered to replace the right motor mount.

I ordered mine from PartsGeek

MTC engine mount - rear $42.98
MTC engine mount - front $44.98
DEA engine mount - left $68.98
MTC engine mount - right $69.98

I honestly think I may end up replacing the other 3 with new mounts eventually, but for now I might just shove tie pieces in. I still have the old tires that were in the car, but since 2 are bald there's no use for them. So I'll just cut those up.

And just to clarify, the other 3 mounts were in the 110-150 range, with the one random one for 330. That's parts alone, not labor. I did have them do the rear mount today, and while their labor rate only said 1.5 hours and that's what they charged me, it took over 4 hours. Stupid labor manual actually saved me some money for once!
