Mazda MP3 Blue
So my 2001 MP3 blew the motor. Spun a rod? With only 38000 miles on it. Mazda is going to replace it with a brand new one under warranty. Has anyone one else had problems like that with theirs. I am still going to sell it. What will that do for the price I could sell it for?

damn that sux how did it happen.. like what were the conditions and how hard were u pushing the car if at all??? im curious as to how these motors just some how pop, also i have my car up graded to mp3 engine wise and done want to run in to that problem seing as mazda wont warrenty my motor..

no. they didn't. i voided my warranty a long time ago..but it should fall under warranty, that is if you still have it..you tear up rod bearings when you turne excessively hard to the left..the oil pick up is on the left side of the oil pan..you actually starve a cylinder.

I was not pushing hard at all. I hardly drive super hard at all. I was just drive and heard what sounded like a lawn mower under the engine

#2 did mazda fix yours?

the only thing I had done to engine is CAI, but they said that didn't matter. Mazda has been real cool even got me a rental car. What do you guys think that does to resell value. its gotta go up right?

Hmmm... I'm FI... but mine blew as well just recently... could have been any number of things really... but there was no sign of trouble until she was running awfully rich for a while.. and then POP... that was it! The weasle went! I'm taking it apart next week finally to get a look inside and see what the hell went down... but being FI I'm pretty screwed? do you know which cylinder it was? It looks like one of the middle two.. but if it was the furthest to the driver side, then it is the same cylinder that went on mine... oil starvation could be an easy target to match.... I was in a straightaway when it happened but dunno!

also, there have been rumours of bad rod connections...but those are rumours..the oil starvation is an interesting issue

Yeah I find it pretty interesting as my rod base is still on the crank. No rod exists anywhere... I can see both of the connecting rod bolts, spin the bearing around freely and happily... but just a chewed up metal circle...

I had no signs of detonation, turbo problems or even the slightest bit of running lean and then POP! LOL... but my car was Terry's test bed... so who knows how much of a rough life it has been through in the end!

wow Proteges are going down

like dinosaurs once did...
New ones anyway. You don't hear of these kind of problems with the BPs til well over 200,000.

It always seems to be the rods or rod bearings though. Something needs to be done to improve reliability. It'll be interesting to see how the built-up engines are going to last, like Spicy and Install.

Meh, my BP snapped a rod due to a spun rod bearing. It ate its oil though, so different kind of problem.

Died in a similar fashion though, it withstood a hard 3-4hr long run up and down mountain roads and then on the ride back home on the freeway, cruising at around 3800rpm, snap crackle pop, the rod didn't exit the block but was flapping around inside making a mess of everything, stubborn as I am I drove it home, 20 miles away and then to my mechanic. Gas it up: CLACK-WHIRRRRRRRRR-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK..... figured it was fubar and as it were a new BP was cheaper than a rebuild so I drove on, 3 cylinders and all. lol.

Ya, you told me this before...and in all the Protege and Miata clubs I'm part of, you're the only one who's had a problem.....You have a new BP..that's why...
