Yet another blown engine!

We were considering doing our XEDE piggyback for the Mazdaspeed Protege(http://www.vishnutuning.com/xede_evo.htm) but I am not sure we could sell enough of them to justify the work involved. At $895.00 retail I do not think we would have many takers. Plus this car has only sold in very limited numbers which makes the expense harder to justify.

I think plenty of mazda speed owners would be willing to shell out cash for a piggyback ecu if it controls all the right things, i for one would be willing to shell out 900 for a piggyback from a well known and respectable tuner. My first mod is definitely going to be some sort of engine management.

I am gonna leave my Speed completely stock because of all these blown engines are scaring me. For MAzda NA...my car is completely stock. What I dont understand is the word "mod." I understand putting a boost controller, stand alone or anything that increases performance would void warrenty but what about guages, turbo timers, shifter bushins, BOV, hard pipes, intake and etc. Not really increasing the performace but protecting our investment? Would those be enough to warrent a void on our warrenty?

Im a college student and I def do not have the funds to heavily mod my MSP. But I can assure you as soon as my warrenty dries up and I get a decent job and degree in two year...I'll be putting and investing some money into the speed. Its not that no one will buy anything...its just I dont have the fund to do so now.

Brett, I know R&Ding the piggyback would be costly but we're slowly exlpaining to people the ability of the stock motor with excellent tuning. I'm sure many members would shell out 900bucks for the unit instead of going forged.

It'd be great to have a well-respected tuner such as Vishnu take on the Mazdaspeed Protege, but like you said; the limited release of these cars is a curse. I personally would buy one next year :)

All i have to say is I've been praying for something from vishnu or cobb. ;). All i'll need to know is where to send the check.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I doubt this is true. The number of group buys that has fallen through or not come to fruition because people have "insufficient funds" is staggering.

I have good news for everyone, I have an engine on the way!!
I had to go through about everyone that works at Mazda Consumer Affairs, the Service Manager/Director of both dealerships in Las Vegas and Cerritos, as well as the General Manager @ Browning (Cerritos). Then I had to file two Better Business Bureau cases, one at the main website, and one over the phone with the LA regional office. Those people were pretty quick, Mazda received that file within about 2 days. I was able to get in touch with the girl at Consumer Compliance (arbitrations), before she was able to even look at my file (I am resourceful). She had to wait a few days to hear back from some specialist. It was already a good day, because I had an interview with a really sweet Production Studio in Orange County that afternoon. I had taken the day off work for it. I got the call right before I got to the interview, the agent told me she had good news for me. She said she spoke to her specialist, and was able to get an engine approved. It was ordered that day, and then they found out it was on "intergalactic backorder". Stupid special build vehicle, the parts are so rare! They hope to see it within a week, since they are paying to have it rushed to the dealership. They are treating it as "Goodwill", since they don't feel it was a failure of the engine. I think that is BS, but I am not saying anything right now, because I just want my car back. It was only 3 months old, and it has been gone since Dec. 19th. At any rate, I will let everyone know what the final turnout is. For now though, this is looking like a good thing for us. I did not have any engine modifications or anything. However, even my gauges and turbo timer seemed to be enough to make them think I did. So I would suggest to anyone who has had any problems with their car, do not have any modifications on it when you take it in for service. I will let you know how this turns out. Keep your fingers crossed for me...Thanks! I will be Zooming again soon, I hope!! (wrc)

That's a big NO s***! When my exhaust broke and I took it in to be fixed along with a crap load of other lesser items the only theing they said was, Whoever put that gauge in cut some wires down by the turbo. Now I know the wires were cut/scraped but I don't even have the wire hooked up to my cheap ass boost gauge and that is only only a lead for the light bulb that merely pushes into the back of it and I would have ran that inside the car not to the engine bay. This was again some more shoddy work from the guys -n- gals at Mazda North America that did a sloppy job attaching the wastegate "t" to the hold down and cut the insulation on the bundle of wires next to the "t." The bad thing is because of my gauge I nearly got blamed for it. It did not hurt anything and he wrapped it up with a bit of electrical tape but they will nit-pick that mother ****** apart over anything.
If you want your warranty DO NOT DO major mods unless you are willing to deal with it. My dealer was very good and fixed everything but I had about a benign a mod as you could have and it was looked at in a some-what harsh light. I do have to thank the Tech and the service manager for their concern and timely response bravo to them but be warned mods can screw you over.

I spoke to another Mazda (/Nissan) service manager yesterday. He was calling me for an engine approval, and I noticed he was a Mazda dealer also. I asked him if he has seen many engines replaced in the new MazdaSpeed Protege. He had never heard of it. He said they have been having problems with the RX-8, and the Mazda 6 has some huge recall on it. He said that is why Mazda is being so picky about what they approve. Their budget is so tight, and they are so far over what they are supposed to pay for warranty repairs. I guess they are being threatened to be cut from the Ford family of cars or something. I think they are some of the sweetest, most exciting, best value cars on the market right now, but I am just one guy. I work for Nissan, but I stayed away from the Spec V. I like the 350Z, but they are doing crazy warranty repairs on it too. They are replacing front tires like there is no tomorrow. You don't even want to know what we have going on with the Spec V and Altima 2.5 S cars. Trust me, we are so far over budget for warranty repairs, it isn't funny. That is what happens when you come out with so many new cars, you have to work out the bugs. Mazda has an all new line of cars, they have to realize they need an adjustment period to fix all the issues, or else they are going to lose any customer loyalty they might have been building. Heck, my gf wanted to buy a 3 really bad. After the problems I have had though, she is just going to keep my show car and drive that for now. So much for referral sales, huh? Mazda needs to stand behind their cars, why offer a longer warranty if you are not going to cover any repairs?....

That's funny that you are having problems with the Spec-V. My buddy is on his THIRD engine in his Spec-V. He hasn't even touched the engine and doesn't drive hard. At least the only MSP's that I've head of blowing up are modde and abused.

no, not all of them
there were a few that blew up due to a flaw in design

Yes 3 were from manufacturing defects. I have only heard of 5 going out so out of the few thousand that were made it isn't all that bad considering all they did was slap a turbo on a NA motor and barely tune the ECU for it.
I love my car it is a great little ride but I know that there is more power left in the stock motor with some more boost and a little tuning.
The main thing Mazda scrwed up wasn't really the motor but the PCM and the rear sway bar mount. Small potatoes for the most part.

Looks like I am on blown engine #2 now. Mazda is again trying to deny warranty coverage. I have already retained a Lemon Law Lawyer this time, though. He is the one that wrote the book for California, so I am quite confident I will be getting a new car or all my money back soon. I might get a Mazda 3 or a 6, but I am not sure I trust Mazda's warranty any longer. They don't seem to stand behind their products. I love the cars, but getting a warranty repair from them is like pulling teeth from a Crocodile.
Hah, who else has had engine problems lately??

nictlg7@yahoo.com - Let me know!!

Thanks!!

car won't start

recently i've just had my motor built, and i was in the process of breaking in the motor for 1000 miles without boost, and when i got the car back it was starting rough, and it continually got worse, then just this morning i tried to start the car and it did for about 2 seconds before dying, then i tried starting it again and it just cranked and then i heard a loud bang, and a flame shot out of the exhaust, what's weird is that the last two times i tried to start the car, a cloud of white smoke came out too, if anyone has a clue as to what this might be please let me know, it's not the battery, because the accessories like the radio and the a/c still come on, i'm thinking maybe it's the starter or ignition timing but i'm not quite sure, all input would be appreciated, and i apologize for not posting elsewhere or starting my own thread, it says i'm not allowed to start new threads for whatever reason so, thanks again

dont make a thread in the msp section, put it in the FI section.

sounds like bad news... white smoke is oil... never a good thing.
