wiper replacement - are you happy with OEM blades?

No complaints with the OEM blades. I purchased refills when I changed them last. I change mine yearly... they gets lots of use here in the northwest. Still on stock rear blade though....

Thanks for the input, gentlemen. Just placed an order for a full set of OE refills - 35 bucks shipped. :D

The OE are ok, but on my last truck and my wife's current car, I use rainX blades that have some of the repelling stuff built in and slowly wipes it on your windshield over months. I also use the orange juice in the fluid, and clean my windows with their spray on window cleaner.

I used rainX years ago when it first came out, and always found it a hassle to use.
Then a little over a year ago tried the orange juice and after some time using it couldnt believe how much better I could see. Then added in the other stuff and it is awesome. I am constantly driving through rain storms where I can tell people can't see crap, and are pulling over or driving with flashers on, and I can see with my wipers on low.

I also bought some of this on a whim the other day:

It was next to the register and I started putting it in all the patrol vehicles I have to drive, just in case I get caught in a storm.

Orange Juice??? It sounds almost like you're talking about the actual orange juice, you know, that you have at breakfast. I hope this isn't the case. I would not use the cleaner/repellant you listed as an additive in the washer fluid, I believe on those bottles it says to try and not get on the paint for some reason. The wiper additive that's designed for the reservoir is ok. You might want to give Trico View, or aquapel a try, it lasts much longer then rain-x since it's not silicone based. It bonds to the glass and last 6+ month for a single application.

I went three winter before my drivers wiper rubber blade detached from the body...about 3 inches worth enough to cause streaking. Considering I owned a cheap Suzuki for 10 years and never replaced the wipers I would say the Mazdas wipers are garbage..

I change them annually as they get a lot of use in PNW. Even though CX-5 has a plastic blade frame... I've seen the damage metal frames can have on windshields.

The original blades on a CX-5 are made by Denso and are available in Europe as an aftermarket part. Maybe you can find them in the US. They are also fitted on RAV4s so maybe you can negotiate better prices for replacement rubber blades refills there. They are extremely easy to fit and the frame is so well made it will usually last about 3 years and I change the rubber before every winter. When you consider the hammer they get, especially on such a large blade, they are remarkable really.

My original wiper blades have seen 4 winters and still make clean swipes for clear vision. Even though the car is never garaged and it rains all the time here in the PNW, the original blades have held up spectacularly. I don't think I've ever seen wiper blades that lasted this long. I often park my car under the fir and maple trees at my ski cabin where it's not uncommon to have the blades frozen to the windshield in the morning. I just peel them off, scrape the windshield and hit the road.

Really surprised at their effectiveness and durability!

Do you do anything to clean the blades? Not sure if that's a thing or not. In the past I would just run a paper towel along them to get any grime off them but that's it.

I agree, best I've ever owned on OE. Mine lasted right at 4 years, nearly to the day, and I know had I not been so neglectful of them this last year, I'd have gotten more out of them.

As for cleaning, I clean mine every time I wash my cars. Nothing special, just use the same soapy water (typically Meguiars Gold Glass soap concentration) and a rag. Just gently wipe back and forth across the blades until what comes away isn't black and dirty anymore. :)

If you use a car wash, don't get the spray wax. I really believe the wax on your windshield gunks up the blades causing smearing on it. Just my 2 cents.

Usually kitchen dish soap will pull off most waxes... might be something to try on the windshield to get it off.

I just had my 10,000 mile oil change at the dealer and told them about the streaking wipers and they replaced them for free. Been a few months now and working nice. Heck I'll take free anytime.

My old wipers worked great until I started using this RainX fluid that was suppose to help with water repelling. It worked too well and the wipers just smear water over the windshield. I will never use a RainX product with any repellant product again.

Sounds like something went wrong with either the application or preparation.
With a good clean window using the RainX spray cleaner and repellent, along with some that you squirt into your fluid tank, it is pretty amazing how well I can see with just wipers on low in a heavy rain.
Maybe you got an out of date product or something, but I encourage you to try it again.

I hated the OEM blades and replaced them within a couple of weeks of buying my CX-5 back in 2013.

They were fine for rain, but they were dangerous for snow. In several instances, the snow would clump up on the blades in a way that prevented them from properly wiping the windshield in a snowstorm. I had to pull over several times to clean them off and wipe the windshield because I could no longer see properly. After replacing the blades, no problems at all. The blades I am using now are TRICO Force. They lasted almost 3 years with rain and snow. I just replaced them again a couple month ago when they started leaving lines and streaking a bit (and cleaning them didn't help). They have never given me that problem with snow that the OEM blades did.

I don't like RainX on the windshield either. My favorite blade is RainX Latitudes, but they started adding RainX to the blades, time to try something else. My original blades were good for almost 2 years. Remarkable blades.
